He began with two or three hundred dollars last October and by bold cautious trading since then has grown his fortune to a quarter million dollars. He is a nephew of the late Ed Pardridge and plans to rise in finance.
In Frankfort May 25 the Goebel and Stone factions discuss using W S Pryor as temporary convention chairman to steer delegates against Goebel opponent Hardin. The plan seeks to stampede delegates to Pryor if needed to defeat Mercer County’s candidate. Tensions rise between Goebel and Rhea with accusations of deal making.
At Coverack Cornwall an early attempt to float the liner Paris failed. This afternoon five tugs pulled but did not move her. More coal is being jettisoned from her bunkers ahead of a dawn salvage effort.

He led debates, lectured at Harvard MIT and abroad, wrote Railway Transportation Its History and Its Laws, served as Connecticut Labor Commissioner, and married Helen Harrison Morris in 1891.

President McKinley has decided to travel west this summer as far as St. Paul with no fixed date for the St. Paul portion or possible stops at Yellowstone Park or the coast. He will attend the G A R Encampment in Philadelphia in September.
James E. Norton, a Reading job printer, was arrested on the charge of printing bogus cigar union labels. He was held in $1,000 bail as more than $75,000 worth of labels and eighteen tons of paper used for printing were seized. The counterfeiting scheme is said to be extensive with manufacturers profiting.
Berlin May 2. Emperor William thanked the Toulosis Congress for its message of respect and wished success in medical science to combat tuberculosis. Surgeon J C Boyd of the US Navy spoke in English and softly while other foreign delegates were applauded. the incident drew no political significance. Duke of Ratibor extended courtesies to the American delegates.
Advices from Riga say the Baltic capital saw deadly clashes between Lettish and Lithuanian workers. The military in suppressing the rioting killed twelve people and wounded fifty over Saturday and Sunday.
Emperor Francis Joseph hosted Mark Twain Samuel Clemens in a special audience in Vienna. The monarch admired American military prowess and helped Twain through German, joking that he would translate English. Twain planned a German speech but forgot it and prepared to depart for a four month stay in England.
The bodies of a mother and three children were found at a Joplin tent site. An infant, a seven year old girl, and a nine year old boy died, with the mother and children killed by blunt force. The husband lay dead with a revolver in hand and a bullet hole in his head. The case remains a mystery.
