The Interstate Commerce Commission announced July 1 freight rate cuts of about 10 percent across most classes and commodities, with passengers and Pullman fares unchanged. It also set a 5.75 percent reasonable annual return on actual capital, replacing the prior 6 percent.
The Interstate Commerce Commission has given American railroads until May 31 to accept its findings on reduced freight rates or face formal orders. President Harding's efforts to persuade voluntary acceptance failed, and the ICC announced its decision on May 16. Railroads may appeal to the Supreme Court, claiming a fair return on property, while their stance can aid or hinder the administration’s drive toward normalcy.
A violent rain hail and wind storm roared six miles west of Marion Ohio today about a 100 yard wide swath and caused significant damage. No injuries reported though the wind caused odd damage. The storm seems to have started in Union County and moved through the area.
A planned Klan meet in Akron was halted when Sheriff Hutchinson served a Common Pleas Court injunction, forbidding the gathering on religious dis cord. Dr. C. L. Harrod spoke briefly before the audience adjourned without incident.
The Ku Klux Klan recalls all California Kleagles from the King Kleagle to local units after a probe into alleged lawlessness. William E. Coburn is appointed King Kleagle in charge of Khan interests in California. Imperial Klaliff E. Y. Clarke says reinstatement will depend on adherence to law and public trust.
Bombs and gunfire exploded as tram cars carried shipyard workers home. Ten hurt by shrapnel and bullets, one dying. a gravedigger was shot dead. police were ambushed and two attackers killed. A woman was mortally wounded by a bullet. Eight men seized a tram and set it afire with coal oil. a worker halted the run by pulling the trolley. Fires were extinguished by residents.

Miss Con suelo Baca an 18 year old college student was shot and seriously wounded at Loretto Academy in Pueblo Colorado by Miss Josephine Liberto 21. Liberto confessed saying Baca had accused Dr J F Baca of an affair. Police found an unmailed postal card to Dr Baca and noted he was a married physician.
Judge Roettinger ordered jurors sequestered to avert intimidation in the Reichert payroll slugging trial. Reichert, head of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers, faces charges tied to hiring gang members to slug strikebreakers. Jurors remained under strict privacy at Havlin Hotel with meals, no newspapers, and no contact until verdict.
The International Council of Women representing twenty eight countries accepted the invitation of the National Council of Women of the United States to hold the 1925 quinquennial meeting in Washington D C. The decision was communicated via cablegram to Mrs Philip N Moore president of the National Council.
David E. Soderman told jurors he killed J. C. Powers after his wife’s affair with Powers ruined her life and jeopardized his, recounting their marriage, business ties, divorce, remarriage, and his act in the Waldorf Hotel lobby in Dallas. He cried as he described approaching Powers and firing.
Rev. Jesse Halsey of Seventh Presbyterian in Walnut Hills faced a storm of letters and gossip after a church bulletin read There is room for one more criticizing hypocrites in the church. The anonymous critic claimed hypocrisy while other notes blamed money, Lincoln, and gin mills. Halsey plans to address the issue in a Sunday sermon.
The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra appointed Fritz Reiner, a young Hungarian maestro, as conductor succeeding Eugene Ysaye. Reiner, born 1888 in Budapest, has held posts in Budapest, Dresden, and Rome and is praised for his fiery temperament and refined conducting. He will assume duties in the fall, signaling a new era for the orchestra.
In Waukegan Illinois on May 24 trial of Governor Len Small halted as jurors threaten to strike unless allowed later evening hours. They criticized elderly bailiffs and asked for younger guards to escort them home. Judge Edwards recessed to seek agreement with Sheriff Green and defense counsel.
In a whisky farm trial Judge Peck had just sentenced George Remus and his associates when Remus stepped forward to plead for Elmer Roth. He claimed Roth was a youth who merely worked in his office and urged the court to reconsider Roths punishment. The judge replied the sentence was not severe and Roth must pay the penalty.
Plans call for fire department teams to inspect the city block by block starting early next month. A downtown unit will coordinate with fire towers to alarms, while other teams cover residential and business areas. Officials aim to enforce housing safety and study occupancy rules for new businesses.
George Remus and seven associates were found guilty of maintaining a nuisance on the Dater farm in United States District Court. Sentences ranged from three months to one year with $1,000 fines, bonds posted for appeal, and prior verdicts noted. Bert Morgan testified about a $500,000 bribe offer to reverse whisky withdrawals.
