British Prime Minister Lloyd George told Edinburgh crowds the Allies expect to leveraged united command and seas to overwhelm Germany. He cited shipping gains in April and praised sailors who halted submarine threats as Britain accelerates merchant ship production.
Washington reports American military opinion fully expects the German offensive to be repelled with losses and the German drive to be broken. Many believe the war could end this year, while others foresee a prolonged defense as Berlin seeks favorable terms. American units are now largely in place and ready for renewed combat, with fresh troops replacing losses and several fronts under threat of flank attacks.
Partly cloudy in Ohio and Indiana with Saturday storms in the north and cooler conditions Sunday. Kentucky and West Virginia show similar trends with showers and cooler temperatures. Temperature readings across stations list Montreal and Cincinnati among others with highs near 70 and 80, while a May 2 1918 record at Winnipeg ends at 7 pm along the 90th meridian.
United States Attorneys were instructed by Attorney General Gregory to report on naturalized Germans who have voiced disloyalty. The aim is to pursue action in Federal Courts to revoke their citizenship.
Costa Rica declared war on the central powers on May 24, joining Nicaragua, Panama and Guatemala as belligerents. Honduras cut diplomatic ties with Germany while El Salvador remained neutral. A mob in Birmingham Alabama wrecked the Thompson Restaurant operated by John R Thompson Inc of Chicago after the firm refused to remove wheat products from its menu as other city restaurants had done. Police protected manager Wood as a committee escorted him to the station.
John R. Thompson asserts his chain of restaurants obey all Food Administration orders nationwide including Alabama. He says he wired the Food Administration of Alabama this morning confirming compliance amid reports of an attack on a Birmingham restaurant.
A dramatic chase followed a hold-up at the Mendelsohn Company cigar factory in Cleveland. Two masked robbers entered, forced Grover Mendelsohn to open the safe and take $2,865 as four employees were searched. The wounded man, named William Rodgers, was hospitalized with $118 on him. the other bandit escaped with the rest and will be charged with robbery.
Transmission of correspondence links California clashes with authorities to a wartime trial of 112 I W W leaders. Reports from Stockton detail fires near Modesto and police efforts to blame the I W W, with defendants objecting to the tone of prosecutors in court.
In Simpsonville Kentucky three people in an auto were killed and two women hurt badly when struck by a Louisville and Shelbyville interurban at a road crossing. Victims: A A Isham and wife, Katherine Veach, Belle Downing. Ballantyne fatally injured. party traveling from St Petersburg Florida to Chautauqua New York. Isham a hotel proprietor who left May 15 for Chautauqua Lake.
In Barnesville Georgia May 24 a Black farm hand John Calhoun who killed white farmer John A Willis yesterday was shot dead today while resisting arrest by a posse led by Chief of Police Evans. The chief was lightly wounded in the thigh.
Washington May 24 The Fuel Administration announced a ten cent a ton cut in government fixed prices for bituminous coal. The reduction, effective tomorrow at 7 am, results from the agreement that railroads will pay fixed prices and drop preferential car service to supplying mines. The average drop is about 5 percent saving the public roughly 60 million dollars.
Secretary of War Baker spoke on Italy Day in New York and announced that American infantry machine gun units and artillery would soon join Italian forces on the front. He noted existing American medical, Red Cross, YMCA, sanitary corps, and staff presence in Italy and framed the move as a climax to Italy Day ties with the Allies.
Prince Arthur of Connaught, cousin of King George, arrives in Washington on a special mission to the Emperor of Japan. He calls on President Wilson, is hosted by Earl of Reading, and honors American officers including General Pershing. Wilson to host lunch tomorrow at the White House.
The British armed merchant cruiser Moldavia, carrying American troops, was torpedoed and sunk in European waters. There were no crew casualties, but fifty six American soldiers were missing and presumed killed. The ship, 9,500 tons, built 1903, was struck below the bridge and sank after attempting to reach port. Survivors were rescued by escort ships and supplied with clothing at naval ports.
President Wilson postponed a final decision on starting work now on new revenue legislation after consultations with Senator Simmons. McAdoo urged immediate action, while Simmons proposed a fall special revenue session if urgent calendar business finishes. A next word from the President was expected tomorrow or later next week.
The US ship Wakiva, a converted yacht of 863 tons, was sunk May 22 in European waters after a collision with a navy cargo carrier. Two men, W. B. Hoyt of At tleboro Massachusetts and Joseph M. Farley of 2712 North Racine Chicago, were lost. The Wakiva had been in a patrol squadron and was formerly owned by H. S. Harkness.
The Cork steamer Inniscarra bound from Fishguard to Cork was torpedoed and sunk off Cork. Thirty seven crew members are missing and presumed lost. Five survivors including the Captain, chief officer, one steward and two sailors were landed. The 1412 ton vessel built in 1903 belonged to the City of Cork Steam Packet Company.
Ensign W. W. Lovell of Brooklyn Fireman Bernard F. Stiefwater of Everett Washington and Water Tender Charles R. Moore of Somerset Pennsylvania are reported lost after the American steamer William Rockefeller was torpedoed in the war zone. Lovell, a machinist, was promoted to provisional ensign on April 22 for engineering duties. all three were naval reserves and Lovell leaves a wife at 749 Union Street, Brooklyn.
British and French patrols captured a few German prisoners after a raid under heavy artillery near Bucquoy southwest of Arras. In France, numerous local engagements continued in the Somme sector as heavy artilleries roared around Kemmel Lys Scarpe and Moreeuil to Montdidier. The western front saw persistent aerial activity as both sides fought and bombed, with renewed German attempts to bomb Paris.
