London reports describe a day of protests by suffragists led by Sylvia Pankhurst. A procession from Canning Town to Victoria Park ended with attempts to arrest Pankhurst after she was chained and freed by fellow suffragists. Clashes erupted with anti suffragists and mobs at Hampstead Heath and Westminster Abbey, Newcastle Cathedral and other sites as police struggled to separate crowds.
Tokyo held a vast pageant as Empress Dowager Haruko's body rode in a funeral car drawn by white oxen for the capital’s grand memorial. Americans watched from vantage points while doors along the route stayed closed to honor the royal procession and the late empress. The death occurred two days earlier though official demise dated April 11, with the main service held at a Yoyogi temple base.
Helsinki May 4 Special reports the High Court of Viborg after eight months in prison for refusing to enforce a law granting equal rights to Russians and Finns in Finland. A crowd greeted the sixteen judges as they arrived, police used whips on demonstrators, and the court took place after the judges were held in Kresty Prison, St. Petersburg.
Special Dispatch reports in Cleveland on May 2 that Miss Bessie Phillips aged 27 was killed and C C McJunken a local businessman injured when their car struck a stone on Coit road and Lake Shore boulevard and overturned. Phillips, from Conneaut, had recently come from Pittsburgh to work in a department store and was a hotel guest. McJunken invited her to ride. Phillips was pinned under the vehicle and her neck broken.
Captain Eberle of the Washington cabled the Navy that President Bordas of Santo Domingo was warned to halt artillery fire into Puerta Plata. No firing occurred that day, the dispatch said. The warning aimed to protect Americans and other foreigners in the town.
Washington May 24 Representative Robert Y Thomas of Kentucky sent out new bulletins on the care of the baby to newly married couples in three counties since January 1. He distributed eighty seven copies in Muhlenberg County thirty eight in Todd County and twenty nine in Simpson County. County clerks supplied the wives and the counties other than seven have not yet replied. He said he is in earnest about the matter and the bulletin is useful for couples.
A morning blaze at the A. B. Smith lock in Akron Ohio drove 25 people from their burning building. The fire caused 375000 in damage. Piano dealer A. B. Smith lost 15000. Survivors included W. O. Lynch W. W. Wiest Rudolph Raninger and Charles Blair.
Prince William of Albania and Princess Sophie reestablished in the Durazzo palace under Italian guard as insurgent followers of Hesad Pasha remain nearby. Austria and Italy prepare to land forces to defend or seize the capital amid renewed unrest and potential attacks.
