Boxer Luther McCarty Dies After Calgary Fight

Canadian authorities will probe the fatal knockout of white world boxing champion Luther McCarty by Arthur Pelkey in Calgary Alberta. McCarty died about a half hour after being counted out in the first round as 7000 spectators watched. Pelkey was arrested and an inquest set for later.

Heeter Denies Allegations at Public Hearing

At a Pittsburg hearing, Superintendent Heeter and a support staff contradicted accusations from Mrs. A. H. Wessels, former stenographer. Heeter asserted no improprieties, testified about office routines, and described hiring Miss Alice Lang at seven dollars a month before she was dismissed for refusing extra hours.

Collapse of Big Beach Pier Buries Crowds New Long Beach

Too weak to hold the crowd for British Empire Day the double deck municipal pier in front of the City Auditorium collapsed at Long Beach California. Nearly 10 000 people were in attendance when the upper deck gave way sending hundreds crashing onto the lower deck and into a chute of wreckage to the sands. Thirty four persons mostly women were killed and many were hurt as debris swept the beach and crowded aisles.
