El Imparcial reports a mob incident prompting official denunciation as police actions drew strong criticism and calls for accountability. Local officials voiced concern over crowd violence and the use of force during the confrontation.
Rioters clash as Diaz and Vice President Corral refuse to resign. Dead and wounded reported from police and troops fire. President Diaz feverish in bed. American ambassador Wilson witnesses tumult alongside banners for Madero. Riots spread to Tehuantepec, Guadalajara, Zacatecas with troops firing on crowds.
A delivery wagon driven by William Dougherty was struck by a Big Four switch engine at a crossing near Spring Grove cemetery. Dougherty died within minutes. his two young passengers, ages 10 and 3, were seriously injured. The engine reportedly traveled at least forty miles per hour. The horse pulling the wagon was killed. Coroner Coe ordered the body to the morgue as investigators review the crash.
A Havana panorama shows progress in recovering the sunken U S battleship Maine. A 20 cylinder steel coffer dam surrounds the hull at 39 feet depth, filled with harbor clay, with 19 cylinders filled. Congress has appropriated 650000 for the project approved by President Taft.
Thirty six years ago Fred Maag joined the Cincinnati street cleaning department and rose to superintendent. He credits hard work and businesslike politics for his rise, noting four administrations cost him vacancies but each time he returned higher. Since taking charge ten years ago, he oversaw sweeping innovations and a staff increase to 530 men.
Senator LaFollette predicts a second Lorimer bribery inquiry will reveal more than the previously alleged hundred thousand dollars spent to aid Lorimer. He cites Hines testimony and a long distance telegram as evidence of presidential involvement and behind closed doors pressure to secure the Illinois vote. He urges a special committee to uncover the truth and dismisses Hines claims as untrue.
Edward Hines, named by the Helm committee over an alleged $100,000 Lorimer fund, today denied wrongdoing during his annual address to the National Lumber Manufacturers’ Association, where he serves as president, in Chicago on May 24.
Washington May 24 The obstacle to starting arbitration treaty talks with Japan lies in the technical process of exchanges. Japan hesitates to initiate, lacking official word that the move would be welcomed by the United States. Germany has not been officially informed beyond France and Great Britain. If precedent holds Knox will likely invite Baron Uchida to begin negotiations in Washington.
President Taft refused to grant clemency for Charles W Morse of New York and John R Walsh of Chicago. He upheld the national banking laws, calling Walsh’s conduct moral turpitude and Morse’s methods more severe, with parole possible for Walsh in 1915 and Morse in 1915 under current terms.
Prominent international figures gather at Mohonk Lake New York for the seventeenth Lake Mohonk conference on international arbitration. Nicholas Murray Butler presides as D Estournelles De Constant warns of ongoing work for world harmony amid Ignorance and sensationalism. Speakers include John Hicks Mirza Ali Kuli Khan and discussions cover Taft arbitration treaty with Great Britain and France led by Bryan Butler Smiley.
In Bedford Indiana on May 24 Mrs Ida Payton dragged her companion Inez Prather into a forty foot quarry pit. Both survived after falling into water and were rescued by nearby workers. Payton suffered melancholia while Prather watched.
