Chief Millikin states he has never seen a local white slavery case and has heard only of distant reports in Chicago and other cities. He claims ignorance of the term as applied locally and says he receives many accusations from supporters of the white slave traffic scare.
The Hamilton County Republicans name their state legislative slate and delegates to conventions. Senators Fred Bader Edgar Johnson and Charles Kuhl are renominated with three new representatives William D. Alexander A L Dalton and Carl Krug. Rud Hynicka chairs and William H. Lueders named as permanent chairman with Scott Holmes as secretary.
The senate adjourned amid heated debate over whether the bill should ban rate increases without interstate commerce commission approval or allow a six month suspension period for investigations. Senators Cummins Borah Dolliver Aldrich Rayner and others argued for and against the Cumming provision and a six month timetable with a final decision within six months was discussed.
The National Electric Light association meets in St Louis with about 8 000 delegates. Mayor Kreisman welcomes attendees as Frank W Frueruff president from Denver gives opening remarks. Edison will not attend. a major electrical exhibition follows adjournment. T Comerford Martin argues water power trusts do not dominate US opportunities.
Toledo police Captain Turner sought Rex Hanford in Lawrenceburg Ind on grand larceny charges after a May arrest. Jewelry clothing and a violin valued at 1000 were seized. Hanford, described as Prof, faced Toledo theft charges and was surrendered to the Ohio officer. He also faced a $400 false pretenses claim in Winchester Ky and was said to be wanted in several Ohio cities.
The havin town news notes a printers convention sweeping away indecent posters. Titles such as The Girly of Monte Carlo and The Green Rat are banned along with fake carnival warnings. A Cincinnati bureau is cited for censoring indecent plays and posters.
Fred Kohler who had served as Cleveland police chief since May 1 1908 is charged before Mayor Herrman Baehr with habitual drunkenness gross immorality incompetency and failure to obey orders in a move seen as removal hard to trace to politics. The case was filed by Jay P Dawley and Sylvester McMahon for P J Brown and others and carries 26 specifications though details remain undisclosed.
A Lake Huron collision between the Goodyear and the James H. Wood near Pointe Aux Barques endangers most of the crew. The Goodyear sank after breaking in two, with only five survivors rescued and several crew names listed as missing. The Wood remained afloat after emergency pumps.
A Columbus dispatch reports a regional push for Charles Graves of Oak Harbor for secretary of state, and mentions other Democratic candidates like Frank McKean for clerk of the supreme court, with supporters rallying across counties amid intra party maneuvering. Governor Harmon’s stance and local opposition to J K Todd for state senator are noted along with collision news of the Goodyear.
Washington May 24 The Ballinger Pinchot investigation report faces delay until December as Democrats and insurgents back a Madison led minority report against Secretary Ballinger. Supporters expect pressure for resignation and possible impeachment if the president does not act. Senate Republicans exonerate. Democrats plotting three reports if needed.
In Lebanon Indiana on May 2 4 the Ninth district convention adopted a tariff platform favoring coverage of production cost differences while avoiding Payne Aldrich references. Edward E. Neal of Noblesville won the nomination on the 22nd ballot as Finley P. Mount attacked Kern and Shively over alleged bribery by brewery interests.
Paris reports the Hankow Sze Chuen railway loan agreement signed today by representatives of U S France Great Britain and Germany. The loan of 30 000 000 dollars will be extended to the Chinese government for railroad construction financing.
