May 24 dispatch reports Marquis Di Garroni Italian ambassador to Turkey and staff departing Constantinople. Athens telegraph dispatch notes increasing war activity in Greece and Italian envoy’s move amid tension.
Special Cable reports Italy mobilizes on the Austrian frontier in the southern Alps. The Italian fleet moves from the Adriatic toward Austria's naval bases at Trieste Pola and Fiume. Italy aims to gain Unredeemed Italy including Trent and Friest, with 8 000 square miles and over 1 000 000 inhabitants. Italy’s total war strength exceeds 4 000 000, with heavy artillery and a powerful navy under the Duke of the Abruzzi.
Rome reports a protest over German and Austrian actions that bar 30,000 Italians from leaving their territory. In Rovigno and Pola Italian officials are arrested or confined, while 1,000 Italians near the Cormons frontier are prevented from leaving. Trent’s population is reduced by one fifth as mines are used against fortifications.

London reports Italy abandons neutrality amid mounting domestic pressure and cabinet turmoil. Premiers and diplomats had failed to keep Italy from joining the war, ending the Triple Alliance. The piece also notes the rise of large scale Sikorsky aircraft and a vision of transatlantic air service in coming years.
Edmond Hauptfuhrer, 20, died from gunshot injuries after Ida Riehl, 17, said he would not marry her. The Philadelphia case saw Hauptfuhrer shot by the restaurant proprietor’s daughter, who was arrested and is pregnant.
An official note from London reports 158 killed or missing after a triple collision on the Caledonian Railway north of Carlisle. Most dead were Royal Scots soldiers from a 600-strong troop train, with at least 200 people injured.
Paris reports an official note stating a British submarine destroyed two torpedo boats and two transports in the Dardanelles. It notes heavy Turkish losses near Kaleh Tepe as Liman von Sanders’ divisions attacked, and adds Allied naval success with another submarine sinking enemy ships, while Turkish troops press near trenches.
A joint Britain France and Russia statement accuses Ottoman authorities of orchestrating massacres of Armenians aided by Kurds from mid April in Erzerum Dertshan Moush Zeitun and Galicia. It says all government members and implicated agents will be held personally responsible.
A Vienna telegram printed by the Frankfurter Zeitung says Italy's surprise attack and its justification arouse extreme exasperation in Vienna. It argues Serbia and Russia are not hated as Italy is, and condemns Italian politicians and businessmen for provoking violence against peaceful Italians.
The Commercial Tribune reports optimism that Italy's entrance into the war eases the U S German diplomatic crisis. Berlin dispatch says differences are adjusted and a German reply to the American note is drafted and headed to Washington late Tuesday or Wednesday.
Reports from Udine on May 23 describe dire conditions in the Austrian port city of Triest with abandoned homes and sacked buildings. Police and soldiers are deployed as a dome climber raised the Italian tricolor atop San Giusto Basilica, later removed by Austrian gendarmes. Hundreds of Austrian fugitives arrive in Udine.
The Havas Agency report from Rome says last night a crowd gathered before the Romanian Minister's residence cried Viva Rumania but the minister answered by shouting Viva Italy. The incident occurred as the crowd cheered in support of Italy amid the Romanian reception.
Prince Colonna resigns as Rome mayor to join the cavalry front with three sons already there. Many Aldermen and two thirds of Rome's municipal Council volunteer. Italy declares war on Austria Hungary and mobilizes, with censorship planned and ships seized under new rules. Greece Roumania and Bulgaria watch, while Russia launches counter offensives on the Austro Germán front.
