Columbus May 23 Governor Harmon vetoed two bills that would remove limits on municipal bond issues for park and grade crossing projects. He warns such powers threaten popular government and urges restraint amid a city reappraisal and tax rate protections.
A Presbyterian assembly judicial committee will hear witnesses on charges of heresy against the New York presbytery for granting orders to Messrs Black Steen and Finch after they rejected core church beliefs. A fire at 3 a m heavily damaged the Ohio River Boat Club boathouse moored at the foot of Center street East End. Fire units 18 and Hooks 3 responded. The night watchman who slept aboard is missing and feared to have perished.
The nine month old child of Mrs Anna Blakeley was found suffocated in bed in Chicago. Dr Miller said the cat may have caused the death by lying on the baby's neck though the cat was not on the bed when the body was found. The infant was reported healthy prior to death.
Theodora Stark an 18 year old Minneapolis girl faces a manslaughter charge after a auto collision in St. Paul killed S. B. Shotwell a well known local broker Miss Stark and her sister were held in the county jail overnight for questioning public court action pending further investigation
New York May 23. Prosecutor Garvin of Hudson county plans to seek dissolution of the National Packing Company in New Jersey courts as the next step in his campaign against the meat trust following the February indictment. He said the motion will be filed on June 7.
Paris date May 23 The American French English and German financial groups have practically settled their differences over the Hankow Sze Chuen railroad loan and expect to sign an agreement tomorrow pending China's assent.
Peter Kopar, 12, son of a farmer near Topeka, was arrested for the murder of 9 year old Arthur James after a quarrel over a hat. Kopar returned with a gun and shot James, who died within twenty minutes. Kopar confessed to police.
Durant Elmore grain merchants with offices in Albany Chicago Buffalo and Boston face scrutiny by National Commercial and First National banks in Albany as creditors nearing 500000. Investigators review books amid allegations of bill of lading manipulation and large unsecured paper exposure estimated between 500000 and 800000.
Eighteen passengers were slightly injured when a special train section of No. 10 on the Southern railway derailed near Cedar Run bridge between Catlett and Calverton Virginia. The engine and four coaches left the track two hundred yards from the bridge. cause of the accident remains a mystery.
Detroit May 23 Representative Henry S Boutell urged removing tariff from partisan politics. He spoke at the Bankers club supporting a sundry civil appropriation of 250000 for tariff information and proposed a joint House Senate rule to amend tariff paragraphs without broad overhauls. He praised the Payne tariff as a sound revenue law and argued for gradual scientific adjustment by business methods rather than commissions.
In Panville Illinois Joseph Smith was shot and killed at Westville by John Welsh secretary of the local miners union Welsh had earlier disarmed an Italian who threatened to shoot John H Walker president of the United Mine Workers of Illinois and tonight's tragedy grew from that incident Welsh surrendered to authorities significant details are incomplete due to damaged text
The St Louis and San Francisco passenger train No 4 on the Texas to St Louis run derailed two miles south of Rogers. Thirty five people were injured and three feared fatally as engine mail and baggage cars left the track at thirty five miles an hour. The chair car stayed upright. Cause of the derailment is not known.
The Chicago Railways Company enters receivership after Judge Ball’s $1,344,684 Cook County judgment and bonds dispute. John M. Roach and Henry A. Blair named receivers to protect assets while appeals proceed. The action aims to preserve municipal profits, continue essential improvements, and pursue consolidation with Consolidated Traction if upheld. Westinghouse aids as creditor seeking unpaid $69,000.
