Hamburg reels after a phosgene gas leak in a harbor district, killing eleven and injuring hundreds. German papers question origins and storage legality while authorities confiscate suspected poisoned food and probe tank negligence. Police report the tank leaked despite regular inspections and potential jail terms await proven negligence.
The United States delivered a note to the Nationalist government in China demanding arrest and execution of the slayer of American Presbyterian missionary Dr Walter Seymour in Tsining Shantung. It also urged punishment of officers who failed to apprehend the killer and allowed looting of the mission building. Indemnities were to be sought.
Senate and House leaders clash over a tax bill claiming a potential revenue cut between 220 and 260 million dollars. A conference committee led by Hawley will iron out differences after the House agreed to the Senate request to meet and resolve the fiscal gaps.
John S Williams, 32, painter of 111 West Twelfth street, obtained a divorce from Charlotte Williams, 50, of Los Angeles, in Domestic Relations Court. He testified his wife deserted him last October and that their marriage followed his friendship with her fourth husband Warren Reynolds, who fled trouble and later jailed. Reynolds asked Williams to look after his wife, a bond that rekindled after Williams’ 1919 army discharge and led to their marriage after Reynolds’s divorce. Williams noted Mrs Reynolds had divorced Reynolds and her first two husbands, while the third died.
Col Charles A Lindbergh is named Chairman of the Technical Committee for Transcontinental Air Transport Inc He will oversee equipment fields service routes and safety and will head a coast to coast operation between Los Angeles and New York The plan creates forty eight hour air rail service with day air and night train operations.
W C Culkins executive vice president of the Chamber of Commerce sent letters to Secretary of the Navy Wilbur urging a naval aviation reserve at Cincinnati. Rear Admiral Ziegemeier praised the local naval reserve unit as he visited Lunken Airport and a university aeronautics program was proposed. He called for aviation education in high schools and universities and stressed merchant marine support for regional industry.
George Gilbert 65 of Ft Mitchell Kentucky stock trader helped Charleton Thompson Leathers road near Ft Mitchell build a pond on Thompson property. Gilbert was found drowned in the pond by Thompson while boating. the body had been in the water several days. Coroner Stephens to determine if death is accidental or self inflicted. Gilbert had been in poor health and has two married daughters farming near Brookville Indiana.
The Cincinnatus Association banquet and meeting outlined a plan for a University clinic in Cincinnati with General Hospital links, a Children’s Hospital Clinic, a new dental college, traveling clinics, and improved hospital social services. Robert Taft outlined national to city taxation in a technical talk.
New York May 22 Mrs Esther Wilson a former big game hunter was indicted by the grand jury on a charge of felonious assault against her husband Dallett H Willson a prominent attorney at his office on March 29 in New York City.
At Black Mountain Coal's Kenvir mine near Harlan Kentucky an explosion trapped about seventy five miners. Five dead ten missing while fifteen escaped. Two bodies recovered early and clothing from another found. Three identified as Asher Hall Charles Bradley and Sam Edwards. Superintendent E B Childers confirms operations with roughly seven hundred workers.
In Mather Pennsylvania on May 28 rescue teams report 155 bodies recovered from the Sodice mine after a deadly explosion. Only fourteen workers were found alive, including Frank Krubik who survived sixty hours inside the gas-choked chamber. Authorities say the mine is fully explored and no further survivors remain.
Forty St John’s College students were held in Annapolis Jail after police responded to a riot at a carnival. Authorities said the students clashed with town residents in a general fight during the incident in Annapolis Maryland.
Formal announcement by Myers Y Cooper of his candidacy for Ohio Governor as a Republican. He cites strong statewide support and backs a businesslike administration to cut taxes without cutting services. He notes he narrowed the 1924 Governor’s margin from 180000 to under 17000 in 1926.
Dallas May 22 Texas Republicans split their convention amid a fight between Hoover backers and an uninstructed faction. The Littleton Wurzbach group held a separate convention after disorder at City Hall and will seat four at large delegates with an uninstructed slate, while Creager’s faction urged 22 delegates instructed to Hoover and named him running mate. The split underscores a deep rift in Texas GOP ahead of Kansas City.
Thomas R. Preston of Chattanooga, president of the American Bankers Association, tells Ohio bankers that decentralizing industry is the remedy for farmer troubles. He supports service charges on unprofitable checking, opposes cutting time-deposit rates until all bank departments turn profitable, and notes brokers loans dominated by securities. Stilmar Realty Company will add two stories to the Kemper Lane Apartment Hotel at Kemper Lane and McMillan Street in Walnut Hills at an estimated cost of 150 thousand dollars. The firm, which bought the property yesterday from Walter Friedlander, aims to make the hotel one of Ohio's leading suburban establishments. President Henry Marks leads Stilmar, which also plans a large department store on McMillan Street near Peebles Corner, costing about 1 million dollars, as part of a broader site development including the Cambridge Building at Sixth and Race Streets bought for 750 thousand dollars three weeks earlier.
Reports from Everett Buffalo and Sussex detail three separate plane incidents. In Everett Ralph Hunter 25 and Pilot Davis died as a plane fell in a tail spin north of the city. In Buffalo John Emmet Wisp, Curtiss Airplane Co. employee, died. G M Grey injured. In Sussex Virgil C Kinney 27, an amateur pilot, was killed when his plane nose dived from about five hundred feet.
The home of Lewis W. Powell, U S Attorney for Wisconsin, was bombed in Kenosha. Powell and his four children, inside at the time, escaped injury as the residence suffered serious damage.
Bitter denunciations of United Mineworkers of America officials were voiced by save-the-union leaders at a special convention in Belmont County Ohio. The meeting which opened with about three hundred miners from forty two locals resulted in a decision to form a separate Sub-district No. 5 organization.
Dr Walter Forchheimer 62 eye specialist with offices at 11 West Fourth street died suddenly yesterday at Good Samaritan Hospital. He was born and raised in Cincinnati and a graduate of the old Ohio Medical College where he served on the faculty. He resided with his sister Miss Emma Forchheimer at the Auburndale Apartments and leaves another sister Mrs Emma Stewart wife of Dr Robert Stewart. Funeral services will be held at the residence at 2 30 this afternoon with Rev John Kemae officiating. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery.
Peking May 28 report says a decisive battle in the Northern defense of Peking against the Nationalists is imminent at Wangtu 110 miles south of the capital. Yang Yu-ting chief of staff for Marshal Chang Tso-lin vows to fight to the bitter end to stop a Nationalist raid on the railway to Peking.
Intruders entered through a window at 258 Ludlow Avenue yesterday and ransacked the residence of Jacob Moerlein. Jewelry valued at 145 dollars was stolen.
