A rapid jury selection and crowning of the May Queen marked courtroom ceremonies. The case moved swiftly with jurors chosen in record time as the trial began, highlighting efficient proceedings and public interest in the event.
The opening of Dr. Arthur Warren Waite’s trial for the murder of his father in law John Peck featured a 90 minute jury selection. Prosecutors said Waite, a young dentist, killed Peck to gain access to money and noted Waite’s disappointment over a wedding present of 300. The defense will rely on insanity.
In New York on May 22 the General Federation of Women's Clubs opens its convention. Husbands will escort wives to lodgings each night and serve as escorts or “carts” for millinery. Prof Maurice C C Tanquary of Chicago reports the American expedition to Crocker Land in 1913 achieved strong scientific results. The team faced ice delays at North Star Bay and a damaged ship earlier. The expedition, led by Donald McMillan and backed by the American Geographical Society and New York Museum of Natural History, included Frederick Patterson and Judge Carroll Spriggs of Dayton.

Mexican bandits attacked a detachment of the Seventh Cavalry near Santa Ysabel, with Private Strong missing after the fight. Snipers wounded a party of soldiers at Deemer's Ford, none injured, while half of Colonel Sibley’s forces turned back to face Yaqui Indians trailing Langhorne's division.
In Cleveland on May 22 a local firm completed what is claimed as the world s largest reflecting telescope. The seventy two inch reflector and thirty foot tube will be shipped to the Dominion Astronomical Observatory in Victoria Canada for use in astronomical observations.
Washington May 22 The Supreme Court announced it would adjourn Monday June 12 and reconvene in October if the docket allows It recessed today until June 5 in its regular schedule
Berlin May 22 The Federal Council or Bundesrath held a lengthy session with decisions to be sent to Emperor William for approval. The agenda included shaping the empire’s economic policy and new rules regulating food supply distribution. The council, Germanys highest legislative body, has sixty one members appointed by states.
Melrose Simmons files charges with Governor Whitman accusing Captain H. E. Sullivan of denying vacancies to Jewish recruits at Battery D Second Field Artillery. Simmons cites an affidavit by Max J. Klein and says antisemitism is widespread in the city National Guard.
Mauna Loa volcano near Honolulu erupts again with lava flooding from the crater at about 7,000 feet. The lava flows southward at roughly one mile per hour after last night’s breakout.
