Baltimore May 22 T Dudley Riggs well known society man athlete and sportsman died today after a long illness from pemphigus a disease rare in humans and usually found in cattle He was 38 and a noted Princeton University football player in college He likely contracted the illness in stables at his country place in Green Spring Valley
Harry Mann, a 22 year old truck driver, stabbed his father to death and slashed his brother during a drunken delirium in a Twenty Ninth Street flat. He remembers nothing of the crimes and will be examined by Coroner Winterbottom with precautions for his safety. His mother pleads for mercy, saying drink stole her son’s wits.
Mrs. Alice Wessels testified she endured repeated insults and improper advances by School Superintendent Heeter while employed as a stenographer. The testimony described a restroom incident and a formal complaint led to a delay as defense witnesses prepare to refute. A prior physician's report and letters corroborate the misconduct claim.
Chicago May 22 The Rev Robert F T Milligan inventor of bodily salvation religion has been arrested on Miss Alice Turrentine complaint. He faces a potential hearing May 27 for alleged ardent courtship with his ninth wife and the overlap of eight prior marriages. Milligan allegedly sent a disturbing letter calling her his sister and demanding exclusive affection while living with his 18 year old wife.
Washington issues a warrant for the rearrest of Henry W A Page a wealthy English linen merchant convicted in Washington for libeling Congress. He was sentenced to five years and a $1000 fine and released on suspended sentence. The warrant cites violations of suspended sentence by writing grievances to the President and attacking the Department of Justice. Page circulated pamphlets declaring Congressmen crooks and sought impeachment of several New York judges. He could not be found at his office and was said to be out of town.
In Columbus on May 22 at the Ohio Federation of Humane Societies meeting officials decided unclaimed dogs cats and other animals collected by cities will be killed by electricity. Asphyxiation and poisoning were rejected as brutal and the electric cage was endorsed with the animal led inside and the door closed to deliver the fatal shock unseen.
Robert Webb was found guilty on his second trial for the murder of Detective Peter Hart and sentenced to life imprisonment in Chicago. The verdict came today after the lengthy legal fight surrounding the auto thief case.
Chicago officials seek sequestered personal property for assessment. County Attorney Chindblom receives a letter from a Chicago Heights man claiming his property is himself his wife and nine children. He jokes a tax on them would be hard to collect.
Harrisburg May 22 The general eldership of the Church of God named a committee with power to institute proceedings to recover church money invested in securities of little value by M K Smith Findlay CO the eldership Treasurer Efforts will be made to recover as much as possible The elder ship also amended its constitution limiting investments to first mortgages on real estate
In Rockwood Pennsylvania May 22 a wealthy farmer Gibson Umstott found a monster black snake on his porch swallowing a cast iron rabbit used as a doorstop near Cresaptown Maryland. After capture the reptile was forced to disgorge the toy then restrained and later taken to Cresaptown distillery for rye mash and finally turned over to police after measuring 9 feet 1.5 inches.
Boston May 22 William H Rice owner of a Quincy granite quarry testified as state witness in the trial of William M Wood Frederick B Atteaux and Dennis J Collins for conspiring to plant dynamite in Lawrence to discredit textile strikers He said he supplied twenty to thirty sticks to Ernest W Pitman for blasting in Worcester and identified Pitman and Breen as recipients He admitted Breen lied to police and that he could not recall certain pre grand jury conversations
