He named Colonel Robert A Ammon as recipient of $240000 and described the Franklin Syndicate scheme. Ammon claims he was framed by Alfred R. Goslin and vows to fight the charges when the trial opens in June.
Washington May 22 The permanent treaty with Cuba was signed after months of negotiation led by Minister Squiers. It includes the Platt amendment as a treaty provision and binds Cuba to avoid any alliance that would impair its independence, with the amendment already part of U S law through the army appropriation act.
Special Despatch reports Representative McDermott of New Jersey, a strong Cleveland man and former state party chair, stating that Cleveland could carry New Jersey beyond a shadow of a doubt. He predicts Western Populists would back Roosevelt and says Democrats see this as a proper ridance of Populist alliances.
In Indianapolis on May 22 Lulu Hadley a chambermaid who refused to make Booker Washington's bed was chloroformed and robbed of forty three dollars. The household was attacked with everyone knocked unconscious and the house searched during the night. Negroes reportedly sent threatening letters and were seen prowling around the premises. The crime went undiscovered until morning.
Lawrenceburg Indiana May 22 brutal attack near Manchester Station leaves Martin Kaiser near death and his 17 year old daughter Anna missing two local women Mrs Mary Griffin and Mrs Jane Darling witnessed the assault and described a tall black man suspected of the crime bloodhounds and hundreds search the area while a man matching the description was reportedly arrested in Cleves Ohio Kaiser 73 a German farmer is in critical condition with a fractured skull and deep facial injuries.
Malden Mass May 22 Judge John Ward Pettengill 66 died tonight of heart disease. Pettengill was sent by the National Republican Committee into Illinois in 1859 1860 to stamp the state for Lincoln. At Civil War opening he organized a CharlestonMass company, which he equipped at his own expense and sent to the front.
Georgetown Ky May 22 The Court of Appeals rendered its opinion on Commonwealth's Attorney Franklin's motion. Judge Cantrill had questioned whether the majority intended to overturn all prior decisions or merely govern him. The ruling states the regular circuit judge could not preside and a rule will issue. Judge Benton may be appointed as Special Judge.
Mark Twain and his family are under medical care at their Riverdale home on the Hudson. Two physicians and trained nurses attend Samuel L Clemens his wife and two daughters Clara and Jean as Mrs Clemens suffers nervous prostration. The strain on Twain has led to a collapse and he has stopped all literary work.
A 30 000 gallon Standard Oil tank was struck by lightning and destroyed. Firemen attempted to pump oil away but heat halted efforts. At 8 PM cannon fire opened the base of the tank from a special ordnance train from Cygnet. Hundreds of men built levees around the site to prevent spread.
Treaty negotiations with Chinese Commissioners advance in Washington on May 22. Only two issues remain with a likely compromise on Manchuria ports, as the United States aims to obtain one port, Taung Kou at the Yalu River, instead of three.
