London dispatch reports no immediate move to fill the vacant premiership as Bonar Law’s illness keeps leadership open. Rumors place Marquis Curzon and Stanley Baldwin as frontrunners with possible Third compromise options amid Conservative divisions and cabinet reshuffles.
Seven Dortmund district coal mines shut down as Communist agitation for higher wages spreads. An estimated 32 000 miners are striking with 10 000 more prevented from working. A Dortmund Communist rally vowed continued action supported by breadstuffs and Moscow aid.
An earthquake was felt at 11 o'clock last night at Foggia northeast of Naples. The tremor lasted four seconds with no casualties or damages reported.
UNIONTOWN Pa May 21 Captain Francis Murally and Lieutenant W C McGinnis army aviators from Washington were injured when their craft crashed into a mountain side five miles east of Uniontown after losing bearings in a heavy fog. Both were burned by a gasoline-tank explosion. Murally remained in hospital. McGinnis left after treatment.
Three gunmen robbed Shapiro Brothers Pharmacy at Rockdale and Burnet at 9 pm taking $75 as Mrs Rose Jacobs warned customers and faced gunfire. The trio fled in an auto after a chase by a man known as Cantor who was shot at but unharmed. police later noted similar recent hold ups by three armed suspects.
Florence Leeds the former show girl in the Stillman divorce case indicated she may pursue legal steps to obtain child support for her five year old son Jay Leeds. She stated James A Stillman withdrew support last October and she may sell her Park Avenue home to fund living and education costs.
Shipping Board officials recruiting 1100 crew for the steamship Leviathan in drydock Boston have 20000 applications from across the country. Among them are 100 women seeking stewardess matron chaperon and counsellor roles.
Reports from Washington indicate uncertainty in negotiations with bandit leaders over American and other hostages in China. The State Department backs the Peking diplomatic council approach and refuses Washington intervention, warning it could endanger captives. Roy Anderson seeks official powers to aid talks, but no foreign intervention unless Schurman approves.
The Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce River-Rail Terminal Committee urges establishing a non profit river terminal at the four acre Baymiller street site. Backed by Jones & Laughlin and Carnegie Steel, the plan envisions leasing city land, installing equipment, and charging a fee per ton of freight while boosting Ohio River traffic and inland distribution for leading steel firms.
The Ohio Association of Real Estate Boards' Executive Committee voted 11 to 3 to refer the referendum decision on the Taft and Albaugh taxation bills to thirty local boards. Each board has ten days to decide, with approximately 100,000 signatures needed to place the measures on the Norber election ballot. President John E. McCreheneo said the tax rate must stop rising on real estate and called for a modern taxation system.
Cincinnati sent William Reehl Walter S Schmidt and William Dyer to the Ohio Association of Real Estate Boards meeting in Columbus. The delegation supported the referendum fearing Taft tax increases would raise property taxes.
In Rochester New York on May 21 Frank Aiey 65 of Brockport was pulled from a creek by passerby Herbert Chapman a Clarkson fruit grower. After a brief stop Chapman drove back along Lake Road and Aiey staggered into the road being struck and fatally injured by the same motorist.
The Canadian Pacific liner Marvale, 7121 tons, struck Cape Freels rocks near Trepassey and sank in seven fathoms off Cape Pine. All 436 aboard were saved and landed at St Shotts, to be taken to Trepassey. The Glenmurrie lies ashore at Spot Point, with floatation efforts failing.
The steamer Messenger rescued twenty passengers from the Chippewa after it ran on rocks near Middle Bass Islands. The Chippewa, operating between Sandusky and Lake Erie Islands, was pulled free by tugs and headed to Put-in-Bay for the night. No damage was reported to the vessel.
The steamer Edward A. Demmer with twenty seven crew members sank in Lake Huron forty miles off Thunder Bay Sun day after a collision with the steamer Saturn. Twenty six crew were rescued by the R L Agassiz and one by the Eads. The Saturn's fate is unknown. The wreck lies in about twenty seven fathoms of water.
The steamer Saturn reached the mouth of the river at Port Huron Michigan with its bow badly damaged following a collision with the Demmer.
A enormous snowslide swept down the Colorado mountainside striking the west end of a tunnel on the Denver and Salt Lake Railroad between Corona and Dixie Lake. Four workmen were killed and two injured in the incident.
Paulding Ohio May 21 Forest Munger farmer was shocked to death yesterday when his fishing rod touched a high tension wire. Police said water on the rod completed the electric connection. He left a widow and three children.
A Lausanne delegate warns Greece will go to war with Turkey to fix indemnity, threatening to quit talks. The pronouncement follows tensions at the peace conference amid ongoing disputes over reparations and territorial terms.
Thomas Valentine Rankin, a 22 year resident of Pleasant Ridge, ill with Brights disease, will be moved from his hovel by the railroad trestle to the General Hospital. He believes a curse placed by a former enemy caused his decline and lives with his dog Gyp in a squalid, isolated shelter.
Bedford citizens adopted resolutions opposing President Harding’s appointment of H. M. Stowe of Marion Ohio as Bedford Postmaster. Stowe, an Elks home resident, is said to aid Marion Ohio through tax plans. Protest notes Stowe’s ties to the President and argues against taxing Virginians for Marion’s finances.
Lausanne May 21 Greek Foreign Minister M Alexandris warned that Greece will accept the gage of battle if Turkey insists on settling the indemnity issue by arms. He said Greece will withdraw from the near Eastern conference if Turkey persists in demands and cited Turkish troop mobilizations in Thrace and unrelated provocations as grounds for renewed hostilities. He urged mutual renunciation of reparations as the only path to peace while noting Greece would defend its honor if war resumes.
Warrants were issued for Dale G. Ebersole and Charles Scheer on charges of harboring vicious dogs after attacks on a passerby and a child. East and Wenzel testified to dog bites. dogs held for health authorities as investigations continue.
