Special Dispatch to the Commercial Tribune reports federal authorities rounded up about a half dozen men in Shoals Indiana on charges of defrauding the government by violating civil service laws. The sweep implicates Fabius Gwin a longtime political figure allied with the Taggart Crawford Fairbanks machine. Indictments describe impersonation for civil service exams, with jurists alleging the most ambitious such conspiracy since competitive testing began.
Five Carbon Steel men urged for Panama Canal indictment
Grand jury in Western District of Pennsylvania recommends indicting five Carbon Steel Company employees Samuel M. Wetmore David A. Simpson Dennis K. Bullens Henry Lutz and James E. Lacy for conspiracy over allegedly inferior steel used in Panama Canal locks. Two others W R Warren and Fred Schoppe named but not indicted after giving testimony.

Chicago Woman Shot on Train in Italy
Mrs. Mary A. Flavelle of Chicago was found dying in a train compartment near Arezzo after a young Italian shot her and fled. A pocket book with a $1,300 Chicago bank letter of credit had been cashed. a baggage label with her name and a visiting card reading Miss Blanche Marie Flacourt were found. She was 60 and remained in a coma after failed bullet extraction.
