Oklahoma City May 19 The General Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church South voted 171 to 105 against granting laity rights to women. Miss Belle Bennett supported the measure while Mrs. T B King opposed it. A minority report urged full lay rights for women, while the majority favored rejection. Bishop retirements and bishops’ leave were also proposed in committee reports.
Chicago census data show twelve hundred children in a single block bounded by Division Blackhawk Holt and Dickson streets. The area is nearly all Polish with Louis Link as the top contributor at seventeen children.
Edward Hanley president of the Dayton Gas Company was stricken by indigestion at Union Station in Cincinnati. He was rushed to a hotel for care and planned to return to Dayton as his condition remained serious. Bundenthal Fiorini of Dayton stayed with him overnight. Hanley was a leading conservative Democrat and was a main Senate race contender before Atlee Pomerenes victory.
In Budapest on May 19 Count Stephen Tisza the Hungarian Premier and Stephen Rakovsky a member of the lower house dueled with rapiers. After five bouts both were wounded Tisza with a cut to the right arm and Rakovsky with a six inch abdominal cut. The duel was halted and both left the field without reconciliation. The dispute began from a May 4 committee room altercation in Parliament.
