Washington report notes Dr. Alexander Graham Bell plans to develop a powered kite aeroplane system at Burdette Nova Scotia with aim to compete with balloons at the St Louis Exposition. He will test detached power and bearing surface to steady flight and lift.
Jeff Mintz a private investigator says he knows who killed Agatha Reichlin but lacks enough evidence for a jury. He plans to return to Lorain as Detective Goldsmith seeks a reopened inquest by Wednesday and Lorain Mayor King discusses funding.
In Kokomo Indiana three young men died under mysterious circumstances with Coroner’s verdict of death at hands of unknown persons. Louis Yeager was shot after visiting Myrtle Finley in Hemlock. Francis Sutton was slain after visiting Stella Peters. Jacob Dotterer was murdered at his home. A mysterious woman linked to Yeager’s death remains missing and may hold the key. Rewards will be posted for Dotterer and the other two cases.
Special despatch reports Sen Samuel L. Patterson of Pike County naming Myron T. Herrick for president. Patterson warns Ohio endorsement this year could risk patronage leverage next year and cites Herrick’s strong business backing and growing political appeal.
Senator Foraker declares Ohio Republicans favor Theodore Roosevelt as 1904 presidential candidate and urges endorsing him at the state convention. He cites precedents from 1887 and 1895 and praises Roosevelt as a capable, popular leader who has kept Republican principles and strong national leadership.
Mrs Mary Louise B Owen becomes the richest woman after California courts grant her forty thousand acres in Mexico valued at about 60 million dollars. The land originated with Colonel A K Owen and Mexican grant to Benjamin Cannen, now settled in her favor after tied up court proceedings. The Owens plan to move to Topolobampo on their land to build a house with a veranda overlooking the Pacific.
On May 19 Pope Leo XIII conferred the dignity of domestic prelate on Bishop McDonnell of Brooklyn during the twenty fifth anniversary of his priestly ordination. Prominent church leaders attended including Archbishops Quigley Ryan Elder and Bishops McQuaid Chatard Ludden O Connor and Mgr Marchetti. He becomes an assistant at the Pontifical throne and a member of the Pope's household, wearing robes from Rome.
Great Falls Montana May 19 The snowstorm has caused up to five million dollars in losses with ninety percent of Montana sheep on ranges perishing. Three herders died freezing after wandering away in the blinding storm. No prior Northern Montana storm matched its fury and losses are widespread across the district.
East Helena Montana May 19 Mon tana City once a thriving placer camp four miles south of here with a daily paper hotels and fine streets was destroyed by fire Sunday. The camp long deserted had declined from a population of 4000 and the blaze was believed to be set by tramps who used abandoned cabins as shelter.
Indianapolis May 19 Carl J Carrolson who claims to be heir to the estate of murdered New York millionaire Rice was arrested on a complaint by his wife who charges he attempted to murder the entire family with chloroform He denies the charge He says records prove his mother was Rice's son’s wife Carrolson had just returned from Texas on Sunday
Philadelphia authorities burned 1300 slot gambling machines worth about 125000 at public ceremony. Seven hundred were seized by the Law and Order Society and 600 by police over five months. Director Smyth holds 250 pounds of coins. Gibboney faces nearly 1600 in cash taken from machines.
Chillicothe hosts a grand eve of Ohio’s centennial celebration with visiting dignitaries including Governor Nash and General Keifer. The program features a plaster cast unveiling of Edward Tiffin, a city parade of bands, and a detailed day one schedule with speeches by Harmon, Randall, and Grosvenor among others.
Manila May 19 Lieutenant Walker of the Constabulary was killed by a superior force of fanatics near Cebu. Two Constabulary privates died, three captured. two prisoners were murdered, one escaped. The insurgent strength in Cebu exceeds 1,500, with efforts to suppress the disturbances anticipated. William Ballon, formerly of the Fifteenth Cavalry, halted a second insurgent rush at Suclatan Mindanao May 15, defending the dead and wounded until relief.
In Frankfort on May 19 William Coovert a merchant was found dead with a note saying he planned to take his life. An autopsy found death from a heart blood clot due to natural causes. physicians found no poison and conclude he did not die by his own hand.
Indianapolis May 19 Dr Louis Runnells reported Newton Booth Tarkington is suffering with typhoid fever but in no alarming condition. The physician said it is typhoid fever and patience is needed as changes may occur. Tarkington's fever and pulse were noted as part of the update.
In Bucyrus Ohio on May 19 John Luney was impaled by a stake driven beneath his window. The stake penetrated his bowels and remained six inches inside. Luney fell from a second story window while sleepwalking, then withdrew the stake before summoning help. The wound is reported to be fatal.
Berlin May lecture for the American Chamber of Commerce declares that American trusts spread through Europe mainly with foreign money. Ernest von Halle notes European capital sent abroad as German law taxes trades, aiding foreign ventures and injuring German business while the United States leads industrial intellect and organization.
Springfield May 19 Bailiff Charles Hollingsworth of Urbana wished for something to happen and it did as his own house burst into flames and burned to the ground. The blaze erupted just after he uttered the plea and prompted quick response from local fire crews.
General Jacob H. Smith, on a brief stop in Rome, visited the Panthaeon to honor the tombs of King Victor Emmanuel and King Humbert. He was welcomed by Italian veterans and expressed respect for two late kings who shared a soldier’s life.
Midship man Arthur O. Barber from Kent Ohio, fourth class at Annapolis Naval Academy, drowned in the Severin River after cramps struck during a swim with Cadet N L Chapin of California. Chapin and a sailor tried to rescue him but failed.
Russian official Governor Bogdanovitch was killed in UFA by two men in the town park. The incident occurred today in European Russia causing a sudden death and prompting a police inquiry.
Circuit Judge Redwine mails a request to Governor Beckham asking for militia to attend the special term of Circuit Court next Monday. Officials aim to have troops by Friday or Saturday and offer a parade ground on the north town commons. Commonwealth's Attorney Byrd travels to Louisville saying he will prosecute if Jett is indicted.
A stranger tried to hire Moore's restaurant cook to deliver breakfast to Curtis Jett in jail Winchester Kentucky May 19. The cook fled to Moore who alerted authorities but the man could not be found. He boarded a Jackson bound train and authorities suspect Jackson figures behind the plot. Jett faces trial and remains hopeful of return to Jackson.
Curtis Jett and attorney John Stevenson failed to win release by habeas corpus as Jackson seeks to have Jett returned for the murder case against J. B. Marcum. Judge Benton set June 4 for jailer Boone to answer and allowed the habeas petition to proceed. The case draws scrutiny over motives of Jackson officials and a request by Captain Dan Hurst to call a special court term.
