British submarines sink three German steamers in the Baltic amid wartime hostilities. The action adds to tensions and raises strategic questions about naval power and supply lines. An allied inquiry follows, while observers note American financial support shaping Irish uprising responses in London.
President Wilson directed a State Department effort to delay the execution of Jeremiah C. Lynch, a New York naturalized citizen convicted by a court martial for involvement in the Dublin uprising. Lynch, said to be sentenced to be shot at midnight, awaits word of a possible reprieve as investigations proceed.
Prof. G. A. Wood of Ohio State University appeared in Municipal Court on a trespassing charge after a chase prompted by a garter snag and mistaken identity as a peeping Tom. Hearing set for May 23. The incident occurred as Wood fled over a fence into brambles before being detained by a neighbor and police.
President Wilson signed an order for the immediate release from Atlanta Penitentiary of Joseph Short of Brooklyn. Short and his wife were convicted in 1912 of counterfeiting. Mrs Short's sentence expired in 1914. The president cited two children growing to understand the disgrace of a prison sentence.
The General Conference elected two new bishops on night ballots. Dr. Herbert Welch of Delaware Ohio and Dr. Thomas Nicholson of New York City each 54, with Nicholson securing 553 votes. Leonard of Seattle was reported elected on the tenth ballot. The session also adopted temperance measures and revised ministerial probation rules.
Swedish rescue teams saved the crews of several ships torpedoed in hostile waters. The operation showcased coordinated life-saving efforts and rapid response, with crews evacuated to safety and reported in stable condition.
British submarines torpedoed and sank the Kolga and Bianca off Landsort and later the Hera near Landsort. Crew losses included the Kolga’s captain and second mate. Mrs. Ellen Brinzer a 70 year old inmate at Logan County Infirmary is ill with the measles. Cyrus Cochran an 87 year old resident near Bellefontaine has the whooping cough.
Special dispatch reports five men shot in a strike riot at Ansonia Manufacturing Company. About 100 strikers marched to the plant. guards fired on first floor workers and police and imported guards exchanged fire. One striker, Charles Tolco, was wounded in the neck and likely to die.
In Washington on May 18 Sir Edward Grey said the Vatican had represented to Germany a plea to abandon submarine warfare. London reports say Berlin conveyed thanks but noted papal mediation was not needed at present as relations with the United States remain delicate.
A smoking car toppled onto its side as a train pulled from the Braintree depot toward Boston. Five men were injured including Thomas Connell who is seriously hurt. Cause of the accident remains unclear.
Secretary of the Navy Daniels announced that on June 9 Admiral Fletcher will retire as commander of the Atlantic fleet. He will be succeeded by Vice Admiral Henry T. Mayo, famed for demanding Mexican troops at Tampico salute the U S flag, with Mayo to be followed by Rear Admiral D W Coffman.
Alexander Lowe of Marion Ohio waited at the Claypool Hotel in Indianapolis for two strangers who vanished with his four thousand dollar stake. He said he was involved in a wire tapping game tied to a horse race and had bet the money with the men, who later fled to Chicago to raise more funds. Detectives are active on the case.
Chicago May 18 Plans for a suffrage parade during the Woman's Party convention were announced. Twelve women representing as many States will lead in snowy white, followed by thirty six women in gray with a ball and chain, illustrating states denying women the vote.
Chicago based preparedness drive seeks a national defense show of strength with a June 10 parade plan. Mayors of 25 large cities urged to organize events and mobilize smaller towns to join. Milwaukee St Louis Cleveland San Francisco Los Angeles Des Moines Joliet Peoria Minneapolis Kansas City already on board. A Chicago fund of 25000 dollars supports the effort to influence Congress during the G O P Convention.

Washington May 18 The House Naval Affairs Committee abandoned the administration five year naval program and approved a 240 million dollar current year plan. It provides five battle cruisers four scout cruisers ten destroyers twenty submarines three coast defense ships one seagoing hospital ship one fuel oil ship and one ammunition ship plus a navy enlistment rise and marine increase. The vote split strictly along party lines with eight Republicans opposing the program as too small.
Treasurer McAdoo announced after a conference with Senator Simmons and others that revised estimates show a national income balance of 150 million dollars for the year instead of a deficit. He projected a July 1 1917 balance of 13.5 million dollars rather than a 62 million deficit.
In Washington on May 18 Speaker Clark and Minority Leader James R. Mann clashed as Democrats pressed to push through a ship purchase bill. Mann denounced the measure, saying the government could not buy $50,000,000 worth of ships without inviting scandal and graft.
President Wilson summoned Senator James Hamilton Lewis to the White House and urged immediate confirmation of Louis D. Brandeis to the Supreme Court. He expressed strong displeasure over the Judiciary Committee's delay in acting on the nomination.
Affidavits charging operating without license charging more than 8 per cent per year and loaning money on personal property were filed against eighteen Cleveland pawnbrokers by Walter C. Jacobs of the Loan Regulation Bureau. Three weeks earlier he filed charges against seventeen other money lenders.
Ohio doctors J. P. Sawyer and George R. Crile told the Ohio Medical Convention that goiters stem mainly from worry and strain. They urged mental influence to calm patients, noting fear of surgery harms outcomes. Crile cited Lakeside Hospital tests to ensure patient willingness before operations.
