Chicago May 18 T Taggart president of the French Lick Spring Hotel Company denies reports of an fever epidemic at the resort and says physicians declare no new typhoid cases in six weeks except one preexisting case.
Grand jury testimony in St Louis reveals $10 000 arranged in $500 blocks to defeat a bill lowering Excise Commissioner fees. Witnesses include W T Harrington State Superintendent of Schools and R P Thompson Chief Deputy Excise Commissioner. The bill passed granting the commissioner 40 percent of the income.
In Greencastle Indiana on May 18 the death of 35 year old Mrs. Henry Seward near Fern is investigated as a mysterious homicide. Police doubt a negro tramp and consider a discarded lover. husband claims a stranger attacked her with a hacked club. An arrest was expected that night.
Paris May 18 Senator Piot writes Premier Combes urging government to award decorations to mothers of big families. He cites France depopulation as a serious menace and asks that mothers of large families receive equal recognition with firemen, gymnasts and others already decorated. Plot plans to propose a mothers decoration with ribbon and cross.
Walbridge Taft of New York and Edward Lawrence White of Lowell were in Norwalk Town Court for assaulting John D. Milne, superintendent of the gas department at Connecticut Railway and Lighting. Taft received a nominal $1 fine plus costs for technical assault, while White was fined $25. Both appealed to the Superior Court.
A new heating apparatus used on trial at the New Palace in Potsdam set fire to the Crown Prince Frederick William’s apartment. It destroyed silk hangings carpet and furniture but fireproof walls prevented further spread. A report was sent to B William.
Postmaster General Payne mails letters to Comptroller and Auditor seeking explanations on Tulloch accusations. He distinguishes irregularities from unlawful acts and signals serious questions about the Comptroller and Auditor's conduct. Machen seeks papers as Fosnes guards records. no resignation urged.
Second Assistant Postmaster General Shallenbarger ordered Svend Schibsby a railway postal clerk at Kansas City to show cause why he should not be dismissed for promoting suits against the government for traveling expenses of postal employees. The department opposes a nationwide push to sue over travel costs with 9,000 clerks involved. It argues headquarters are the postal routes, not home towns, and a Court of Claims case tests traveling expenses.
Ex Lieutenant Governor Clay Knoblock is killed in a Main street affray in Thibodeaux. James Garault, a barber, fired after Knoblock drew a revolver but failed to fire. Garault surrendered and may post bond. Knoblock survived by wife and son Earle, a New Orleans businessman.
Herbert Woodcock a Bridgeport Ohio wholesale hardware dealer. He walked into a sanitarium for nerves and fled into a crowded street. His brother and friends pursued in a wagon with a police patrol. After a chase he shot himself and died before help arrived.
Washington May 18 Prof Alexander Graham Bell resigns as president of the National Geographic Society to devote all his time to perfecting a new kite flying machine. The board accepts the resignation effective when his successor is elected next winter.
Clarence H. Venner the Boston banker paid a $1,000 fine for contempt of court in the United States Circuit Court for failure to produce books of electric companies where he is president. He was sentenced to six months in jail and remains in custody of the sheriff until Judge Humphrey returns.
In Marseilles the Capuchins who barricaded their convent were tried and condemned to pay a fine of 5 dollars each. The father superior declared the fines would not be paid. A crowd of about 2,000 demonstrated and several arrests followed.
Marvin Kuhns, the escaped penitentiary desperado, assaulted Guard W. H. Paschall of Morrow County, breaking his nose and cutting beneath the eyes. Kuhns claimed the guard insulted him. the guard said he ordered Kuhns to stay out of a room. No mace or gun was drawn.
Misses Elmo Snyder and Anna McCrory deputies to Surveyor Kennedy and Auditor Edwards won a contract from the County Commissioners to paint the huge cannons on the courthouse lawn. They completed the work before a crowd as Republican convention delegates gathered and received eight dollars plus a large collection, all for aid to the needy sick.
Indianapolis May 18 The author Booth Tarkington remains seriously ill with typhoid fever his temperature rising to 103 He has not eaten solid food for weeks and is very weak He recently finished a four act Napoleonic play The Man on Horseback and has handed it to H B Liebler for production.
In Kokomo Indiana on May 18 Franklin Burns testified a dream warned of a shooting involving Louis Yeager and a mysterious woman who lured him to death. Residents offered 1000 dollars to capture Yeager’s killers, detectives were hired, and coroner Harrison said new evidence would aid the inquiry while the key witness remains missing.
In Bedford Indiana on May 18 Will Rocky a renowned contractor, in a liquor frenzy, forced the cemetery sexton to unearth his buried child. He opened the coffin but the body disintegrated in his arms as police struggled to restrain him and place him under arrest.
In Cleveland Joseph Kirwin, an alleged garroter, pleads not guilty to first degree murder in the Maggie Snedgar case. The indictment also cites robbery, his wife and four month old son present as their father faces jurors as the trial begins.
Beren da Cal May 18 President Roosevelt set new travel speed records for Yosemite Park as his coach covered sixty nine miles from Yosemite to Raymond in ten hours of travel. He rested at Bridal Veil Falls overnight and woke refreshed to greet Fresno Chamber of Commerce members and friends upon arrival. The President gave a brief thank you address to the crowd.
In Buffalo New York the national gathering of Baptists from Maine to California opened at Prospect Avenue Church. Key topics include coordinating national societies and the Woman’s Missionary Society heard a speech by President Mrs Grouse praising the sacred duties of wife and mother and urging annual reform in child welfare over saloon influence.
