Berlin May 18 The German Emperor abruptly proposed a Frederick the Great statue for the United States during a private theater reception. Sculptor Uphues agreed to the commission, and a cable to President Roosevelt followed. The Emperor also authorized cadet officers to visit West Point, sailing May 25 on the Barbarossa.
Madrid May 18 report states an anarchist plot against King Alfonso has been uncovered with arrests including Gabriel Lopez of an insurance firm. Dynamite cartridges were found and Lopez claims a man named Francisco Suarez supplied them for use during the royal procession. Police say sympathizers and several workers are detained as the case unfolds.
Paris, May 18. The Chateau Des Vives, owned by Mr and Mrs Humbert tied to the Humbert Crawford lawsuit, was entered by burglars last night. They broke sheriff seals and stole valuable pictures from the property.
Miss Julia Williams daughter of Mrs Julia Williams of Detroit died at the Fifth Avenue Hotel from an overdose of strychnin pills. She had been staying with her mother at Saranac Lake for health and planned to travel to Atlantic City. The coroner ruled the death accidental. She was engaged to Pitts Duffield son of Gen H M Duffield of Detroit, who was present at the hotel.

In Hazleton on May 18 Ralph M Easley secretary of the National Civic Federation met strike leaders and President Mitchell of the United Mine Workers. Mitchell planned to set up HQ at Hotel Hart Wilkes-Barre and awaits district consent for a possible national convention on the anthracite strike.
A Bradyville camp meeting turned chaotic when a woman member of the Holy Band went insane and tried to pull the tent down on attendees. She was stopped before harm occurred, then the gathering dispersed as the disruptor caused panic.
Milwaukee May 18 lightning started a blaze at Andrew Uchlein stock farm near Racine killing 102 standard bred horses. Uchlein, a leading Schlitz Brewing Company officer, raised fine breeds on his country place. Fire caused by a lightning strike.
Rome May 18 special dispatch reports Mr Taft Mgr O Gorman Mr Smith and Major Porter will be received by the Pope as envoys of Napoleon and Bismarck were in olden times. The Pope plans fullest ambassadorial honors for Taft and may establish a permanent American legation at the Papal See. A letter to Cardinal Gibbons outlined the plan. Mgr O Gorman is in Rome and has met Cardinal Rampolla. The Pope will approve Archbishop Messmer as Manila's Archbishop, replacing a Spaniard.
Mansfield Ohio May 18 A county treasurer sues Patrick Hogan for back taxes totaling 1470 over six years. Hogan, a saloon keeper, reveals copper stock profits and a family tale of a buckskin vest containing about 3500 in gold plus 1200 in greenbacks found after his brother Thomas Hogan died. Jury verdict 168. both sides seek new trial.
Belgrade May 18 King Alexander accepted the resignations of the Servian Cabinet. M Passics, formerly a Radical, is entrusted with forming a new ministry.
A May 18 report from Goliad Texas describes a tornado that struck at 3 45 pm lasting about five minutes. Ninety dead and over a hundred injured with extensive property damage including churches and hundreds of homes. Relief trains from Victoria Cuero and Beeville mobilized to aid survivors as telegraph lines failed along the gulf coast.
Reports indicate a severe tornado traveled from the Gulf Coast toward Kentucky, striking Texas hardest with extensive property damage and loss of life. By last night conflicting word emerged about Golia, with estimates ranging from fifty to two hundred fatalities and widespread destruction.
