The U S Railroad Labor Board unexpectedly ordered downward wage revisions for more than one million unskilled workers, effective July 1, with the amount to be announced June 1. Hearings on June 6 will tackle proposals to cut other classes’ pay, potentially affecting up to two million railway workers.

A 5,000 year old seed found in a mummy hand, one of twelve, sprouted in Greenspring Valley greenhouse near Baltimore. The seed was given by Mrs. Samuel Taft and grew into a vine with two blooms after months of careful watching by the local botanist.

A northbound Ohio electric traction train derailed at Chestnut street and Central avenue in Hamilton Ohio tonight crashing into a tree and an automobile. Motorman Ben Beckett 40 of Trenton sustained two fractured ribs and possible internal injuries while Martin Mahon a negro suffered severe cuts. They were taken to Mercy Hospital by police. The car conductor James Sims was in charge and about forty passengers were aboard. ThePenick automobile was damaged.
In Washington on May 17 the Borah amendment to the 500 million dollar naval bill gained momentum as Senator Poindexter and administration supporters signaled backing for a call a naval disarmament conference with Britain and Japan. President Harding remained noncommittal though talks circulated that he had communicated with Republican leaders by letter and phone.
A New Jersey women’s auxiliary of the American Legion presented President Harding with a memorial urging no undue haste in national disarmament. The petition argues men tainted by war prefer credible armament to deter attacks, even at high cost. Led by Mrs. O. D. Oliphant of Trenton the delegation delivered the appeal.
The Senate Military Affairs Committee unanimously votes to report the army bill at 335 million dollars providing for a minimum army strength of 170000. The committee trims 5000 from subcommittee figures and notes House passage implied an average of 150000. Present strength stands at 230000 while Weeks sought 175000 and last Congress funding of 346000000. Vocational training funding rises by 300000 to 1500000.
The State Utilities Commission granted Hocking Valley Railroad’s request to close its Langley station in Wood County on June 1 due to expenses exceeding receipts.
The Polish Executive Committee in Silesia led by Adelbert Korfanty telegraphed the Inter Allied Commission proposing retirement to ensure immediate hostilities ceasefire if allied troops occupy the ground. Korfanty also issued an ultimatum over a Polish Silesian currency to ease wages payments amid German resistance, with frontier forces strengthened and miners' wages in jeopardy. France offers encouragement to insurgents as unrest grows with mine output halved and rail traffic restricted.
President Harding informed West Virginia Governor Morgan that federal troops will not be used until state forces have exhausted all resources. Telegram from Secretary Christian conveyed the decision after meetings with Weeks and other officials. Authorities brace for possible renewed clashes on the Matewan anniversary as state police tighten patrols.

The 76 year old Chief Justice White of the United States Supreme Court is near death as physicians report a weak pulse and bad heart. White had refused to quit work during illness and served in the Confederate army and U S Senate before his 1894 Supreme Court appointment.
Airplanes carrying mail will land on the roof of the new government Post office to be erected in Chicago. The cargoes will be conveyed to trains or motor trucks via belts or tunnel cars.
Mrs Emma C Bergdoll was sentenced in Philadelphia Federal Court to one year and one day in Atlanta Penitentiary and fined 7000 for conspiring to aid her sons Grover and Erwin Bergdoll to desert the U S army All five defendants appealed their convictions but lost Their sentences may be remitted if fines are paid by June 2 The case also involved Charles Braun James Romig Albert Mitchell and Harry Schuh with varying penalties and remissions.
Two of three inmates escaped after sawing bars on the third floor of Newport Kentucky City Jail at midnight. Samuel T. Carter and Harry Vickers fled via a window 30 feet above ground. Carter led the escape and was later linked to a recent robbery at Fenders Rosing department store. R. W. Suttles, the third prisoner, was captured after breaking his leg on a jump and was taken to Speers Hospital.
A semi official note from Berlin states Germany will pay 150 000 000 gold marks immediately to the Reparations Commission as the first instalment toward 1 000 000 000 gold marks demanded by the allied ultimatum. The payment will be in foreign currency at a commission designated location, with the remaining balance to follow within twenty five days.
A general strike has been declared in Asuncion, the Paraguayan capital, in sympathy with the striking street car employees. The dispatch to The Nacion notes the action was announced today in Buenos Aires.

Harry Schueler, 4324 Archer Lane, arrested for reckless driving after a collision with Clifford Heizmann, 17, at Eden Park green house. Frederick Heizmann, 23, suffered minor cuts. both cars damaged.
Federal Judge Westenhaver told the Cleveland grand jury that prohibition liquor ruins health of scores daily and those who sell it commit a crime tougher than government penalties. The panel opened to hear nearly one hundred federal cases, mainly liquor-law violations.
