Dr. David Roberts testified that Grace Lusk urged him to declare love and threaten to expose his wife. He described meetings in Milwaukee and Chicago hotels, letters from Lusk, and a revolver used to threaten him and later the double tragedy.
Ohio and Indiana forecast showers and cooler nights with fair Sunday. West Virginia and Kentucky expect showers early with cooler spells and partly cloudy skies later. Temperature readings from Montreal to Kamloops show a mix of rain and dry conditions with notable highs around 86 in Phoenix and 78 in Omaha, plus several 60s to 70s across major cities.
The League to Enforce Peace at a Philadelphia convention adopts a platform calling for victory over Germany and a lasting peace through a league of nations. It warns against inconclusive peace and cautions that German concessions could mislead the Allies unless militarism is destroyed.
The Nelson Liner Highland Scot is aground sixty miles north of Rio de Janeiro and may be a total loss. The ship is taking water rapidly and salvage seems unlikely with cargo ruined. Passengers were saved after leaving Buenos Aires on April 29 and grounding occurred May 6.
President Wilson arrived in New York for a Red Cross parade review and to open a 100 million dollar war fund drive with a speech. Crowds greeted him at the station and during a fifteen mile city drive with Colonel House and Mrs. Wilson. He declined to acknowledge being the President, joking that onlookers saw a tired man enjoying himself.
Dublin May 17 A proclamation issued tonight says a German plot in Ireland has been discovered. The Viceroy calls upon all loyal Irishmen to defeat the conspiracy.
A London dispatch reports that Edward Shortt signed a proclamation for Ireland accusing certain persons of German contact. It appeals to loyal subjects to aid in defeating the maneuver and urges voluntary recruiting to avoid conscription.
Elihu Root and Lord Reading were honored in Toronto as they lauded Canadian soldiers for superb courage and fortitude on European battlefields. Root, former US Secretary of State, received an honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of Toronto, while Reading commented on the war’s fortunes.
Amsterdam May 17 Emperor William touring graves at Aix La Chapelle is quoted saying soldiers of the world war will teach and lead the youth at home He adds that war’s sword will be reforged into plowshares and nations must unite as brothers for peace and civilization He notes it was not well that the war occurred.
Baron Burian, Austro-Hungarian Foreign Minister, tells Az Est that extending the Austro-German Alliance is a historic necessity. He says the defensive pact will deter enemies, protect Austria-Hungary and Germany, and promote peace by their united strength.
Premier Wekerle said the new defensive alliance with Germany would not hinder future economic ties or a potential league of nations. He denied war aims, noting only a plan to maintain peace and prolong the existing alliance. Opposition leader Karolyi pressed for terms to be submitted to the House.
Lemuel H. Jones a Melrose veterinary surgeon on French Island near La Crosse committed suicide and cremated himself after leaving a note. He had contracted lumpy jaw while treating cattle and sold his car before the act.
Washington May 17. The third Liberty Loan reached 4,170,019,650 dollars with a 39 percent oversubscription beyond the three billion goal. About 17,900,000 subscribers participated. every federal reserve district oversubscribed, Minneapolis at 172 percent, New York at 124 percent. Treasury notes potential minor changes from late bank reports. Secretary McAdoo calls it the most successful loan in U S history.
May 17 report details American soldiers in Picardy showing uncommon valor. Lieutenant James Pellache of Harvard and Lieutenant Stephen FitzGerald of Boston fame were killed. Pellache fought on after being mortally wounded and strangled a German, FitzGerald led a platoon in No Man's Land until a fatal head wound, and Jack Fritz of Boston ordered retreat then fought alone amid German attacks.
Testimony in the trial of 12 IWW leaders details James Phillips directing efforts to tie up Atlantic and Gulf coast shipping last summer. He warned of sabotage and mass strikes to halt industry and influence war measures. Correspondence shows IWW control over ships and recruitment of German and Austrian sailors.
Official report on the Faith second trial off the Pacific coast notes the vessel performs as well as any steel ship of similar size and power. It logged 10.2 knots with minimal vibration in heavy seas and will shortly begin its cargo maiden voyage.
