May 7. Reports from sources close to the administration indicate Germany will offer to halt attacks on unarmed ships before saving crews and passengers. German Americans backing a settlement would stand with Wilson if a break with Germany occurs.

Near Nebraska City Nebraska five tramps were killed when a Missouri Pacific freight train wreck caused oil tanks to explode and burn. Two carloads of silver bullion for the Omaha smelter melted in the heat. Rescue was impossible as flames engulfed the area and the bullion spilled into a field beside the tracks.
Georgia Prison Commission sets May 31 for a hearing on Leo M. Frank's petition to commute his death sentence for the Mary Phagan murder to life. Governor Slaton has 75,000 similar clemency appeals. Myron T. Herrick Philander Knox and other prominent figures intercede by mail.
A nolle prosequi was entered in Calumet Michigan on May 17 in the case against West ern Federation of Miners President C H Moyer and 37 other officials indicted for conspiracy by the Houghton County Grand Jury over acts during the copper strike. Judge P H O'Brien granted the motion. Prosecutor W J Galbraith said the strike proved leaders discredited mercenary agitators and the gospel of class hatred.
Cleveland announces a new one cent streetcar line to start by June 1. It will run from the public square to the lakefront piers at East Ninth street, serving lake steamers with no transfers accepted. Fifteen minute service will be kept with extra cars during ship arrivals and departures.
