Special Dispatch to Commercial Tribune reports William H. Taft condemning U.S. aid to Mexican Constitutionalists and linking mediation actions to near general intervention. He urged Americans to support peace efforts despite limited enthusiasm for war and noted the Tampico and Vera Cruz context.
In Vera Cruz harbor the exodus of Americans and other foreigners is pictured. Mrs Boenerker and her three children Teddy Louisa Fritz left Mexico City by train on April 22 fearing war. Rails were torn up and passengers walked for hours before rejoining a train to Vera Cruz after British counsel secured passage with General Maas.
General Funston reports the Destruction of the San Francisco Bridge over the Antigua Ravine 28 miles from Vera Cruz cutting rail links between Vera Cruz and Mexico City. He cites 3000 Federals near Vera Cruz and hints at imminent battle with American forces.
Special Cable to Commercial Tribune London May 17 John L Griffiths American Consul General at London died suddenly at his residence of heart disease He had been recently ill but appeared convalescent He was born October 7 1855 in New York studied law at the State University of Iona and practiced in Indianapolis He was consul at Liverpool in 1905 and consul general at London in 1909 His wife Caroline Henderson of Lafayette Ind they married in 1889 He was writing the life of former President Benjamin Harrison.
X ray shows fingers set and healing progressing after accident near Capitol Hill. forehead cut mending and Bradley rallying rapidly. Doctors expect him to resume congressional duties in a few days. Bradley quips he could not resist running for the Senate.
Mrs. Emily Bakus and her sister Miss Marietta Wright, both noted and wealthy, were found dead in their locked bedroom as a gas jet burned. Relative Frank Croston, who arrived to finalize a Rochester property sale and deliver $10, discovered them in their West Side stone residence filled with paintings and relics.
A pleasure launch capsized in the Mississippi River at Minneapolis on May 17. Five of the nine aboard, including Mrs Otto Justimann and three Buckholz family members, drowned. Buckholz wife and one child and a Weber relative were saved.

Three members of the Stout family are killed and three others fatally injured when an Indiana Union Traction car collided with their automobile at Fort Benjamin Harrison. Thomas Stout, his son Claude, and J C Shafer died. Mrs Claude Stout, son Kenneth four, and William Stout were seriously hurt or fatally injured, as Mrs Thomas Stout sustained serious injuries. Stout, a wealthy real estate man, had taken the family for a ride and failed to notice the approaching fast car. The auto was torn to pieces.
A Cleveland blaze on St Clair Avenue leveled a three story brick block. Three firemen were injured and a resident may die after returning to the building for his wife's jewelry. Over forty residents fled as flames trapped occupants, with an explosion in a paint shop adding to the danger.
Naples reports a large portion of the crater rim of Mt Vesuvius is at risk of collapsing due to recent volcanic activity. Local authorities monitor the plume and warn residents near the summit.
General H A Axline of ColumbusAdjutant General of Ohio for four terms and former Internal Revenue Collector died at Good Samaritan Hospital after cancer operation. He helped chase Morgan through the area and served in Civil War and Spanish-American War. Funeral Tuesday at 10 will be private with Union Veteran Legion G A R and Masons in attendance.
Mrs. Michael Brennan, aged 80 and mother of Ohio State Treasurer John P. Brennan, died at her Urbana home today after a period of infirmities of old age.
Washington May 17 In a bid to aid President Wilson the Democratic National Committee released statements from Ohio delegates at Baltimore endorsing the national platform on canal toll repeal They quote supporters including John W Devanney Newton D Baker and Goeke who say a large majority of Ohio Democrats favor repeal while others such as J W Smith John S Snook Thomas P Schmidt Don Yeung and A W Ashley repudiate the plank
A passenger line tragedy unfolds as the revenue cutter Seneca rescues sixteen seamen from the burned steamship Columbian off Nova Scotia. Five men survive amid hunger and exposure, with four found exhausted in the boat and one kneeling, prayers unanswered as the crew endure delirium and thirst. The captain reports rescue at 10 o clock this morning and notes only one may survive.
Washington May 17 Forecast calls for generally fair weather across the nation this week. Showers are expected only in the South, Middle Mississippi and Ohio Valleys, and mid Atlantic to New England around Wednesday. Temperatures east of the Rockies will run near to above normal, with cooler conditions on the Pacific slope. No major storm is expected to cross the country.
On May 17 the British steamer Cetriana carried 1150 refugees from Manzanillo to report killings along the Mexican west coast. Captain Ferguson told Lieutenant Minister of the Geneva's capture by a Mexican transport and the imprisonment of US Consul Clement S Edwards at Acapulco. Refugees described fiery unrest after Vera Cruz fell and a gun battle as Cetriana fled.
Vienna May 16 The ailing emperor’s condition worsened due to cold wet weather and a disturbing cough. Official bulletins remain hopeful but doctors urge a warmer southern resort, though he has refused to depart Vienna to attend to state duties.
Mrs. Wagoner wife of the former Congressman will contest his divorce suit and name a society woman as correspondent. She engages Frederick W. Lehman United States peace delegate as her attorney. Wagoner was born in Cincinnati.
