Six victims of a city disaster include Miss Flossie Fisher a schoolteacher who sustained serious injuries while protecting students. Despite wounds she aided the pupils before succumbing later.
A May 17 cyclonic storm in Northwestern Ohio caused extensive damage. Hundreds of oil derricks were destroyed, and losses run into hundreds of thousands. A school near West Unity and Fayette Michigan faced a deadly impact with teacher Miss Flossie Fisher aiding wounded children despite injuries.
A tornado near Colesburg Iowa last night killed George Lang Jerome Jacobs and a Tupper child. Several others including the Ridenours and Tupper children were seriously injured as the storm damaged the village and nearby farms along the Turkey River and in Littleport.
Fidella Wright Beach aged over 60 is convicted of bigamy in Wood County Ohio making her the first woman ever found guilty of a penitentiary offense in local courts. Her second husband Beach joined husband one to prosecute after learning the first spouse was alive. The jury recommended clemency.

Lieutenant Hill and 25 soldiers repelled a rebel attack near Pasig, with five killed and several wounded. gunboat Napingdan returns from Lake after cannon fire damaged its rudder post near Santa Cruz.
In Cienfuegos, May 16 9 15 p m a Cuban officer killed a black laborer amid dockers demanding back pay. Laborers have been paid and a 25 man guard now protects the Custom House. Local agitators urge complete independence and fear anti American demonstrations grow. Hardware stores report shops looted of firearms and knives. Major Dempsey reportedly worries over rising tensions.
Canal Dover Ohio May 17 A violent wind storm toppled trees and blew signs. Farmer Leo Weaver north of the city had a miraculous escape when a large tree fell near him killing a horse and striking him, leaving him badly bruised with cuts.
The American Association of Physio Medical Physicians and Surgeons met at the English Hotel in Indianapolis May 17. Officers named include President A C Canfield Ohio and First Vice President C A Collins Illinois. Columbus Ohio was chosen as the next meeting site. A banquet was held.
In Manila on May 17 Colonel Summers led the Twenty second Infantry with Minnesota in the center Oregon and North Dakota on the right, followed by scouts and Scott's artillery. They encountered 2,000 rebels entrenched outside San Isidro, repulsed by artillery and flanking. Rebel casualties were fifteen killed and twenty wounded. three prisoners and many rifles captured. Two American soldiers were lightly wounded. The pursuit continued for miles after the town fell.
Manila reports Major Kebbe of the Third Artillery leading a force including the Seventeenth Infantry a Ninth Battalion and a First Artillery battery marching from Calumpit to General Lawton's Division at Arayat. A flotilla of tinclad gunboats transports canoes. Aguinaldo aide Escamillo serves as official interpreter.
The General Committee of Home Missions of the United Presbyterian Church of North America met in Philadelphia chaired by Rev. J A Henderson. The board reports aid to over 200 stations costing 77000 with church contribution of 67000. The Board of Church Extension aided twenty churches and two parsonages at 24980.
Boston May 17 Rev Edward Everett Hale resigns from the South Congregational Church after 43 years of service. He cites advancing age and inability to perform duties and the standing committee urges him to withdraw. An assistant minister will take on heavier labors to relieve him. The parish, though small and not wealthy, holds deep affection for its venerable 77 year old pastor.
Policeman Baginski shot and killed Basso Lio and seriously wounded Savero Lio and Frank Leon after being attacked by about six Italian men. Officer Henry Murray helped, both officers beaten, a riot alarm sent, patrol wagons arrived.
Wittenberg College trustees approve women may study in the theological seminary though Lutheran rules bar ordination. The college plans a $12,000 fundraising drive for campus improvements including dormitory remodeling and a new light and heat plant, aiming to complete before fall.
Vancouver May 17 explorer K T Stoepel reports reaching the summit of Mt Morrison the highest peak in Formosa where he found a tribe of naked people described as ferocious and possibly cannibal skull hunters. He also located a wild Malay group mixing with Chinese in lower areas.
A severe afternoon storm swept through northern Ohio with high winds hail and heavy rain. Norwalk and Bucyrus reported four inches of rain causing downed trees broken windows and damaged telegraph and telephone wires. Upper Sandusky saw several houses unroofed.
On a public highway near Lebanon Kentucky Dr M W Penn and Logan Whitlock, prominent local farmers, dueled over demanded retractions of indictments. Whitlock fired twice wounding Penn who returned fire without hitting Whitlock. Whitlock escaped. Penn likely to recover.
A May tornado carved a path from Pokeberry Schoolhouse near Dalton to Massillon, uprooting trees and destroying roofs and barns. The Kiefer Schoolhouse suffered wreckage and nine people were injured by the storm yesterday.
In Gibraltar on May 17 the land batteries fired salutes for the thirteenth birthday of the King of Spain. The American cable steamer Hooker, arriving May 15 from New York, was dressed with bunting. The Hooker will continue to Manila tomorrow.
Washington reports from General Otis indicate the rebels are disintegrated and demoralized. Lawton advances north from San Miguel after taking San Isidro, forcing the insurgents toward the mountains or sea. With continual contact and flanking blows, the insurgents face a retreat into guerrilla strongholds.
Chicago May 17 Paul Dresser author of On the Banks of the Wabash and Just Tell Them That You Saw Me is sued for 25000 by Martin White ex Chief of Omaha Police now in Chicago. White alleges Dresser promised half receipts from songs in return for aid and has earned 200000 to 300000 from songs without accounting.
Albert Ohl a 17 year old resident near the scene was arrested by Tamaqua authorities and held without bail on charges of placing a spike on a rail that caused a deadly accident on the Philadelphia and Reading Railway Little Schuylkill branch at Zehners. He admitted the act saying he wanted to flatten the rail.
Acting Governor Worthington granted clemency to Sallie Coleman of Covington for manslaughter and Frank N. Blythe of Powell County for manslaughter. Coleman has served six years of a thirteen year sentence and Blythe five years. Governor Bradley is expected to be absent about two weeks longer.
In Eaton Ohio West Alexandria, Frank Campbell shot his divorced wife Lucy Campbell and her sister Bertha Gay after luring them to dinner and locking doors. He then shot himself in the head, leaving three victims, a 45 year old husband, a 40 year old wife, and 21 year old sister, with all deaths instantaneous.
Police sergeant Fritz Passau was shot and killed while searching a house west of Georgetown for the Rosenstein murder suspect. Humphrey Brown alias Buck Brown was captured. Humphrey Taylor, linked to the Lowenstein case, wounded an officer and held officers at bay for hours before surrendering as a mob threatened lynching.
In Norfolk Virginia on May 17 Mrs John O Keefe gave birth to triplets. The father announced the boys would be named Dewey Sampson and Schley. The city buzzes as the family garners local fame from the event.
Massillon Ohio May 17 engineers Lynch and fireman Kilway leaped from a L W passenger train as a freight approached creating near disaster both men seriously injured but the collision avoided as the freight was moving and no crash occurred
Ex-President Harrison traveled as a passenger aboard the St. Paul bound for England to serve as chief counsel for Venezuela in the boundary arbitration. Envoy Extraordinary Don Jose Andrade of Venezuela also voyaged on the same liner.
