Preston Thornton shot himself at the home of Milton H. Smith in Louisville after asking Miss Nettie Belle Smith to marry him and being refused by her and her father. He died at 3:30 a.m. with his parents beside him and burial planned at Cave Hill Cemetery. The tragedy shocked the Smith family, with Thornton's body moved to Mrs. John Mason Brown's home for funeral arrangements.
