Graf Zeppelin, with two of its five motors out of commission, struggles homeward from the Mediterranean as weather and engine trouble slow its progress toward Marseilles and the Rhone estuary. Paris reports no sighting by 4:50 a.m. local time.
In Portsmouth Ohio a Common Pleas jury ruled that the late George D. Selby estate favored his grandson Edward Selby Dillon with one thirty fifth of the 5 million dollar estate, after Dillon challenged the will’s validity alleging his uncles poisoned their father’s mind. The four uncles denied wrongdoing, claiming they spoke kindly about Dillon. Jurors deliberated twenty five minutes.
The Louisiana Senate Court of Impeachment released Gov. Huey P. Long without testimony after a motion to adjourn sine die was supported by fifteen senators. The prosecution caucused and the court dissolved, as Long family members celebrated nearby.
In Pikeville Kentucky a city policeman Lon Robinson was killed in a pistol battle in the Happy Hollows district. Bruce Little, thought to be the liquor suspect, was shot multiple times as he fled after arrest. United States Commissioner Sidney Tribette was wounded in the leg.
The German airship Graf Zeppelin left Friedrichshafen at 11:57 p.m. Wednesday and passed over Lyons France at 5:15 a.m. Thursday Nimes France at 6:40 a.m. Thursday Barcelona Spain at 8:35 a.m. Thursday and the Mediterranean near the Balearic Islands by 11:40 a.m. Thursday. Dr Eckener decided to return to Friedrichshafen at 12:35 p.m. Thursday.
Passengers pondering Lakehurst New Jersey as first stop watch the giant airship in its first twelve hours cover about 1009 miles. It travels toward the Balearic Islands and Gibraltar before a motor malfunction slows its plan to sail over the Azores toward Bermuda and America.
In Chicago May 16 authorities move to bar “set-ups” for hotel guests after Judge Lindley ruled serving water and ice to patrons who add alcohol to drinks can be a nuisance under federal prohibition. The Stevens Hotel joins clubs and cabarets facing similar action. Ice water may be served, but not bowls of ice.

The Red government asserts air superiority after 24 hours of simulated war with Blue forces. Red planes down six Blue ships while Blue casualties reach nineteen. Red ground troops mass along the front from Unionville to Chillicothe as Blue strategists plot an air coup. Maj. Gen. Fechet expected to attend maneuvers with F Trubee Davison noted as assisting.
Alma Rubens motion picture actress was committed to the Southern California Hospital for the Insane in Patton after a narcotics induced outburst. Her mother Theresa Rubens had deputies subdue her following an attack on a nurse, with a complaint signed for removal to the hospital.
William Godsey a 17 year old former University of Cincinnati student was arrested on grand larceny charges after admitting to stealing 40 dollars from roommate John Hardisty the station caretaker. He also confessed to thefts from Thompson and burying Thompson’s watch in Burnet Woods. Godsey came from a Virginia family and left the university March 15 for poor grades. He will be arraigned today.
A bomb exploded on the fourth floor of Trenier Hotel in Chicago during the night. Manager Edward reports the device was thrown from the ground through a window or carried into the room. the hotel sits at a busy South Side junction and is a known gathering place for the local community.
Sheriff William M. Anderson is deemed winner in the Castle Farm marathon contest after promoters abandon efforts. Judge Stanley Struble refused to intervene, halting the event as Pogue and Dixon proceed with further injunctions against arrest. Promoters faced opposition from county authorities and losses to cast and Legion sponsors.
Robert Selbert 35 of 1530 Ruth avenue reported to Police Record Bureau clerk Robert Steltenkamp that around 10 30 Tuesday night he was struck from behind at Fourteenth and Vine. He woke Wednesday in a parked Ford at 1310 Dayton street with a Black man driving off in his car after robbing him of a watch chain knife about $13.50 and two pay envelopes from Shillito's elevator department manager.
Michigan Governor Fred W. Green vetoed a bill to reestablish capital punishment. He called it extreme and said it denied court discretion and targeted women and minors. Legislature adjourns May 29 with no clear path to a two thirds override.
Dr. Harry C. Wayman, ousted president of the Des Moines University, will speak at both services Sunday at the First Baptist Church Newport Eighth and York. He may be asked to become pastor as the Newport church seeks a leader after weeks without a minister.
A 36 member committee led by philanthropist Samuel Mather was formed to re establish the Cleveland Clinic. The Commercial Club collaborates, with a $500,000 fund to aid the project in Cleveland.
Gladys Gibson a Cleveland Clinic operator faced deadly poison gas to warn others at her switchboard and died in hospital. She plugged in sockets and rang all clinic telephones as police, firemen, and ambulances were alerted. Two doctors died after aiding others. the disaster claimed multiple heroes.
