President Wilson warned Governor Ammons that federal troops would stay only until Colorado can resume full sovereignty and control. The state had issued a $1,000,000 bond for militia costs, while Congress debated measures to close saloons and curb firearm sales amid the Ludlow era unrest.
Harley Beard, a choreboy who confessed to murdering three Massies near Ironton Ohio, is questioned again as Ohio officials plan to escort him back for trial. Doctors label Beard a high grade imbecile with the intellect of a 13 year old, reflecting on his motive and mental state.

The Constitutionalist army advancing from Tuxpam plans a coastal march south to confront Federal troops near Vera Cruz. The move aims to speed Huerta's downfall, with strong rebel forces near Tuxpam and ongoing operations across occupied towns and ports in the region.
A minority report from Colorado Senate members argues state measures are inadequate to handle strike conditions if federal troops withdraw. The message, addressed to President Wilson, expresses concern over the legislature’s sufficiency and urges action to alleviate the state’s unrest.
In Leslie County two youths Hubbard Minnard and Henderson Hensley shot each other after a jealous feud over Mrs. Martha Adams, a 25 year old divorcee. Minnard died, Hensley died later, while Mrs. Adams was wounded but expected to recover. The parlor scene left walls and floors splattered with blood as families arrived.
The mass funeral for Mrs. Nancy Massie and her two children, alleged Harley Beard victims, will be held at Greasy Ridge old Baptist Church at 11 a.m. tomorrow. Sheriff Sloane arrives with Beard from Chicago tomorrow midnight, but will not exit the train with him. Grand jury ordered to report May 25 to hear Beard's case. Surviving daughter Mrs Thomas J Hopkins arrived from Hinton West Virginia with her ailing husband.
Five barges carrying about 2100 tons of cargo will move from Balboa to Cristobal at noon Monday as Panama Canal traffic resumes. Gov Goethals reports the CuCaracha channel nearly complete with 1385 feet width and 38 feet depth, enabling 10000 ton ships. Dredges rush work on the Cucaracha slide to maintain the reopening pace.
At Cleveland meeting of Lakewaga Club Republicans tonight hot speeches were delivered by District Attorney Prinkkinson and Frank Winslow. They urged support for laws to enforce honesty in public representation and condemned corruption. The remarks emphasized loyalty to party principles and reform, with the event noted to continue on page 2.
In One Mich on principal street Sam Porter a Negro clashed with police. Porter fired injuring Patrolman Sam Holt in the jaw and Mrs Gustave Friedberg in the groin before Porter was captured. Porter was tackled after a prolonged exchange with Chief Richard Frank. Friedberg’s condition was listed as serious.
Youngstown Ohio May 16 Dr Lamar B Smith a local physician was sent to Columbus to begin an indeterminate sentence in the Ohio Penitentiary for selling cocaine. He appealed to the state supreme court but his conviction stood. He predicted pardon within nine months and asked townspeople to suspend his sentence. Several visitors including women and girls sought to conceal their identity during his prison stay.
May 16 Chicago dispatch reports all defendants in the dynamite piracy cases now on bonds or whose convictions were affirmed will surrender at Leavenworth or be sent to the penitentiary within three weeks. The men include Qlat Tyelmoe San Francisco Richard Houlman Chicago and William Bernhardt Cincinnati awaiting remands and potential pardons from President Wilson.
