A Williams County schoolhouse collapsed in a catastrophic wind event, leaving several people dead and only three survivors reported. Investigators cordon off the scene as emergency crews search the wreckage and families await word.
A May 16 special dispatch reports a cyclone near Montpelier Ohio, echoing the 1894 Kunkle cyclone. It struck a country schoolhouse with 25 occupants. only three pupils escaped injury. The teacher Miss Flossie Fisher is in danger, with multiple severe injuries and eight deaths anticipated as morning reports come in.
A cyclone near the Ohio-Detroit border devastated a small brick school at Alvordton, injuring ten students and the teacher Miss Flossie Fisher. About fifteen children were inside when the structure rolled onto its side and broke apart, with two fatalities feared.
A brick schoolhouse in the Kiefer District west of Massillon collapsed when the west end gable blew in during a storm. Nine pupils were struck by bricks and mortar. several, including Mabel Levers and Susan Lapp, are seriously hurt while Lillian Pitz and Helen Klein were buried under debris. Teacher Charles Reinoehl helped rescue them as three surgeons were summoned to a neighboring farmhouse. The schoolhouse was new and praised as the township’s best.
A 3 o'clock storm in Akron Ohio damaged buildings and injured several people. Factories of Biggs Boiler, Akron Stoneware, and Ohio Stoneware lost large shop sections. Three workers at Akron Stoneware injured but not seriously. Walter L Main circus tent demolished causing panic. One child, George Perry's, severely injured and expected to die. Animals released but only one ostrich escaped.
A severe windstorm strikes Youngstown Ohio damaging chimneys telegraph poles and crippling telephone service. A nearly finished new residence is blown down trapping four carpenters. John Craig suffers broken legs and lifelong disability while the others sustain serious bruises.
Toledo and Northwestern Ohio faced a violent storm from noon to 6 pm. Several small river boats were reported capsized. Plate glass fronts shattered in Toledo, houses unroofed at Tiffin, and injuries to workers at the France stone quarry including Lewis Lestie carried by the wind.
A May 1 wind storm in Pittsburg damaged telegraph and telephone wires, uprooted trees and wrecked fences and roofs. The Tenth Ward Schoolhouse in Allegheny was condemned after the storm. students had just been dismissed and escaped harm. Hail and rain caused additional damage in the suburbs.
May 16 Mt. Pleasant Pa reports a severe storm at 5 pm with torrential rain and damaging hail. Ten houses of the Illinois Steel Company at Moorwood under construction were blown down and destroyed along with a workers house. Store windows shattered by wind and hail.
A May 16 storm in southwest Detroit caused about 40,000 dollars in damage. Forty houses and barns lost their roofs and a three story brick building was demolished. No fatalities were reported.
Captain F E Buchan of the Twentieth Kansas says General Funston has no political ambitions and plans to leave for Cuba to ranch cattle after the Filipino rebellion ends. Buchan spoke upon arriving in San Francisco aboard the Valencia, noting Funston’s statement before leaving Malolos on April 18.
Ohio Attorney General Frank S. Monnett testified before the Industrial Commission regarding Standard Oil Trust. He detailed suits brought by Ohio to curb the trust and noted how the composed companies control production transportation refining and telegraph lines in practice.

Abe Majors was sentenced to die for the April 30 killing of Ogden Police Captain Brown. He chose execution by shooting, with the sentence to be carried out on July 7 between 10 am and 4 pm at Brigham City.
Eight men, alleged former British officers, were seized in Johannesburg on high treason charges amid claims of a 2000-strong rebellion network. Detected by a spy, incriminating papers found. further arrests expected as Pretoria awaits official word and Kruger discusses the matter with British envoys.
In Paris on May 16 General Horace Porter hosted a dinner for a select group. Guests included Count and Countess de Castellane, Count and Countess Laugi er Villars, Count and Countess Tornielli, Mrs. Astor, Mr. and Mrs. Potter Palmer, Prince Cantacuzene, Miss Julia Dent Grant, the Duke of Arcos, the newly appointed Spanish Minister to the United States, and the Duchess of Arcos.
Miss Ella Arnold, a Garrard County girl, was fatally or near fatally shot by Constable Prudent of Guthrie Oklahoma during an attempt to seize Hetch household furniture under a writ of attachment. The incident occurred at the home of Mr. Hetch where he had just paid all but one bill. Prudent, two companions, and a drag removed for the goods despite Mrs Hetch’s refusal. Prudent fired a .45 revolver wounding Miss Arnold and was mobbed by bystanders assembled in the street. Miss Arnold is connected to Baker Higginbotham of this place.
Chicago researchers Profs Joseph Awley and Alexander C Winer claim hypodermic injections of lymphatic fluid from young goats can replace bone minerals and restore youth. They say life may be prolonged, perhaps doubled, though not immortality.
The Great Tent Knights of the Maccabees in Indiana adjourned a two day session at Huntington. Milo Meredith of Wabash was elected Great Commander with J W Replogle Goshen as Great Record Keeper and Adam E Wise Plymouth as Great Finance Keeper. Dr Irwin Goshen became Great Medical Examiner. State membership rose by 2971 and life insurance by 400000 with 177 tents in the state. New tents formed at Linden Indianapolis Brookston Columbus Loomis Rockville Scott Lima Lapel Delphi Windfall and Evansville. Life benefit surplus stands at 14000, up 9000 in two years, easing future assessments. Five thousand dollars will be available for field work in two years.
The Earl of Strafford, married to Mrs. Samuel J. Colgate, was fatally struck by a Cambridge express at Potter's Bar while on a London to Barnet journey. His body was decapitated and taken to a nearby hotel for inquest. Born August 21, 1831, he served in the Coldstream Guards and had recent health concerns.
London reports indicate seven men were arrested in Johannesburg and sent to Pretoria amid a feared plot linked to the South African League. Warrant executions followed a May 12 dispatch from Pretoria, with claims of a four month preparation and 2000 volunteers. Cecil Rhodes denies knowledge of the arrests or reasons.

The local coal firm will pay scale prices but won’t sign the agreement, while miners demand the scale before resuming work. Citizens unite to press for mines to reopen.
Special Dispatch reports Winchester Kentucky on May 16 that the long running Wills case has been compromised. The matter has passed through the Court of Appeals multiple times with total costs and lawyers fees estimated at three to four thousand dollars.
London May 16 Joseph Chamberlain Secretary of State for the Colonies said in the Commons lobby no official word on arrests in the Transvaal had reached him. He did not expect the arrests to have serious significance and noted no South African information to justify anticipation or explanation. The House showed excitement but little belief in a rebellious conspiracy.
In St Petersburg on May 16 Maria Mersh wizka, of noble birth, was found guilty of poisoning her lover and another woman, kidnapping a child, and forging documents andBills of exchange. She received a fifteen year sentence to penal servitude in Siberia and loss of her noble title.
Vienna dispatches claim former Austrian Prime Minister Count Badeni, who formed a cabinet in 1895 and resigned in 1897, died by suicide after losses on the race course. He hailed from an Italian family that settled in Poland and amassed large estates. his fortune was estimated at $2,500,000.
Effie Burkhart a 14 year old girl was killed when she was struck by a freight train on the Evansville and Indianapolis Railroad near Oakland City ten miles east of Princeton Indiana. She wore a sunbonnet that obscured her vision and she had supported her widowed mother by selling papers as her only income.
The Rt. Rev. W. A. Leonard bishop of Ohio opens the Episcopal Diocesan Convention at Trinity Cathedral Cleveland urging harsher church laws to bar remarriage after divorce citing rampant polygamy and divorce abuses. About 150 clerical and 300 lay delegates attend.
London report says Queen’s left eye is totally blind with right eye partially obscured due to cataract. Dr Pagenstecher, German ophthalmologist, examined at Windsor Castle and urged urgent surgery with favorable prognosis. Hoffmann Pagenstecher directs Wiesbaden Ophthalmic Hospital and has prior UK experience.
