Official dispatches from Janina report a Greek division advancing from Gremenitza into a gorge fought at Griboro and Kononari with heavy losses, while Greek forces were driven back toward Paraskevi. Battles at Kamusades continued to evening. Turks hold positions. Larosteli reports 15,000 Greeks abandoning heights and withdrawing to Gremenitza olive groves.
Copenhagen correspondent cites Politiken dispatch from Athens noting a demoralized Greek remnant with undisciplined soldiers hostile to officers. They lack food or shelter and face severe hardships as fever spreads among the troops and General Smolenski is cold shouldered by his men.
London May 11 dispatch from Constantinople says Germany urges the Sultan to insist on European oversight of Greek finances as the only way to secure indemnity payments. Deutsche Bank representatives will arrive next Saturday to press for concessions the Sultan has promised.
London May 1 The Times Athens correspondent reports M Ralli the Premier obtained assurances from the powers to prevent offensive Turkish action as long as Greek forces stay strictly defensive He instructed commanders at Domokos Sourpi and Arta to abstain from hostile acts unless attacked The only Greek force on Turkish soil is the Epirote volunteer band

The Grand Vizier pledges bloodshed for peace terms while war factions pressure the Sultan, with palace intrigues and Edhem Pasha's noted success amid spies.
Crown Prince Constantine denied sensational reports that the Greek army is starving and said troops are healthy with ample food. In Braxton County at Deer Creek mouth two brothers John L. Dickey and B. E. Dickey confronted lumbermen James Tanner Frank Given and Jack Friend after a quarrel over work methods. Tanner threw a stone, Dickey then threw a Samestone striking Tanner and fracturing his skull, killing him. Dickey was arrested.
The General Memorial Day Committee of the Grand Army Posts in Wheeling unanimously voted to observe Sunday May 30 as Memorial Day. They also recommended that the Sunday nearest to May 30 be adopted as Memorial Day nationwide.
Emperor Francis Joseph arrived as King of Hungary to unveil the Maria Theresa monument on the hill where Hungarian kings were crowned. A vast crowd witnessed the ceremony in Pressburg today.

Dayton farmer robbed by four masked men stealing $1,000 after forcing entry bound and gagging him.
Preston Thornton of Lexington lies dying in Louisville at the home of Milton H. Smith after shooting himself in the presence of Nettie Belle Smith, daughter of the Louisville and Nashville president. Thornton, once engaged to Miss Smith, renewed suit and was rejected, prompting the tragedy. Thornton's family rushed to Louisville. doctors attend him as lawyers issue a formal statement.
A May 16 report indicates Congress may swiftly act on a President McKinley message seeking recognition of Cuban belligerency to protect American lives and end brutal warfare. A mass meeting in Washington urged U S support for Cuban independence and a fleet to Havana to safeguard citizens and halt Spanish cruelty.

Options include sending to Foreign Affairs, or forming a Rules Committee special order to act, or awaiting Senate action and considering a Senate bill under a special order. The Cuban insurgents gain strong support in the House.
James Heid of Sandusky aged 72, a retired saloon keeper and pioneer resident, drowned in a bathtub at his home. He suffered dizzy spells and fell headfirst into the tub while filling it. He is survived by a wife and daughter.
Henry Van Buskirk of East Stroudsburg fired on three drunken intruders Clinton Rouck Newton Fritz and Harry Hufford who broke into his home to assault his wife. The wounded Rouck and Fritz were captured while Hufford fled. The victim was in bed with pneumonia and suffered a chest wound. Both assailants face arrest. Hufford remains at large.
A damaging wind rain and hailstorm swept Waco Texas and neighboring areas. Buildings were blown from foundations and cottages damaged. Twelve year old Sam Knox died when a house shifted while he sheltered under it to protect puppies. Several others injured and crops ruined. Early reports say the worst hit was in the vicinity.
Richmond reports deny Washington notices that Congressman Henry A. Johnson is in critical condition. Perry J. Freeman says Johnson has a lung affected and heart trouble but is not in immediate danger.
In Maysville Kentucky on May 16 Mrs Belle Barkley widow of Henry C Barkley rose at dawn and cut her throat with a sharp knife in the kitchen. She is not expected to survive the night and has been despondent since her husband's death. Barkley is known in Covington and is sister to W D Howell with a nephew Henry Barkley in the Seventh Street produce business.
Frank Machemer a 19 year old confined at Norristown Hospital cut the throat of Mabel Kurtz seven at her home in Philadelphia. The child is said to be in critical condition as police detain the suspect who later admitted the act.
In Barbourville Ky on May 16 Judge S Golden was buried at Barbourville Cemetery with Masonic honors as the largest funeral procession in the area attended by hundreds brought by special trains. His son Ben E Golden may succeed to the title.
Lagrange Indiana May 16 grand jury to reopen inquiry into massive embezzlements uncovered in De Kalb County. Local officials have urged scrutiny as the case returns to public attention.
A southbound Atchison Topeka Santa Fe train fell through a washed out trestle six teen miles south of Ardmore Oklahoma at 5 this morning injuring fifteen passengers and crew. Several are listed as fatally injured though no one is dead on arrival. A relief train and doctors were dispatched to the scene and the injured were brought to Ardmore for care.
In Hartley near Layton Delaware Republicans protest the appointment of John Poor as Postmaster. A single committee was sent to Washington to fetch the President and a brass band awaited his arrival to Hartley. The committee returned without the President, provoking a second meeting denouncing McKinley for non Republican policy and failure to interfere.
Lexington Kentucky May 16 Martha Cross a colored woman driven to despair by the loss of her husband cut her throat with a bread knife and is dying Doctors say she cannot recover The incident underscores a desperate mental state in the grieving widow.
Rome reports the death of Cardinal Camillo Sici Hano di Rende Archbishop of Benevento. Born in 1847, he received the red hat in 1887.
Clarence Wolf aged 19 wounded his brother George in Dayton Ohio by firing a revolver when he mistook him for a burglar. George returned to the doorway as Clarence awoke and shot him. the family was awakened by the commotion.
