Toledo police arrest Stanley Andrews 23 who runs an automobile filling station on a liquor charge. Officers say he sold liquor to motorists for 15 cents a drink and seized a gallon of liquor as evidence in this prohibition case.
Surrogate James A. Foley was elected head of New York's Tammany Hall, succeeding the late Charles F. Murphy. He is 42, a City College of New York and New York Law School graduate, with a long legislative record including living wage and workmen's compensation bills and transit control reforms. He will resign the bench to take the Tammany post, with possible return to private law practice.
Hong Kong May 14 Dr Sun Yat Sen president of the South China Government is dead. Known as the Father of the Republic he led revolutions against the Manchu dynasty and became provisional president in 1911 and again in 1921. Born in Honolulu 1862 he trained as a doctor in Hong Kong and had two children.
Jacob Ott, 47, held off more than 20 deputies armed with riot guns and tear bombs for hours at his farmhouse eight miles south of New Athens Illinois. He surrendered late in the afternoon admitting he shot Henry Baer, 40, from his car after a money dispute. Baer died on scene. Ott and his family faced deputies as bystanders Dr Dominick Lanter and Walter Sauerwein were lightly wounded. Baer is survived by his widow Katie Baer.
Warren Allison aged 64, a one-armed man, shot and killed James R. Turner a one legged robber who allegedly tried to rob him. Turner was thought to have attempted the hold up as Allison gathered the day’s receipts from a cigar store where he works, then returned home.
A violent earthquake reported in the Erzerum region of Eastern Asia Minor destroys several villages and costs about fifty lives. Erzerum, a historic Turkish Armenian trade center, sits south of the Caucasus on fertile table land, captured by Russia in 1916 and recaptured by the Turks two years later.
The Horance Dodge estate, the late multi million car maker who died December 19 1920, shows a May 1 balance of 39 390 806 43 according to an accounting filed for probate by executor Howard B Bloomer. The estate includes stocks bonds mortgages notes contracts and real and personal property.
About 1 000 workers attend final dinner at Hotel Gibson roof garden as Community Chest reports 1 795 207 05 subscribed the largest total since 1920 with 83 agencies funded. Team reports show varied performance with several units at or above quota and overall strong participation.
Miss Abby Rockefeller, 21, daughter of John D. Rockefeller Jr., was found guilty of speeding in Traffic Court. Sentence suspended as she was not present. a motorcycle cop cited 29 mph. This is her second speeding charge.
Two brothers linked to the police were arrested on liquor charges. Henry Sandman 69 a retired officer faced unlawful possession and transporting liquor on Vine street while Louis Sandman 55 faced unlawful possession of a still liquor and unlawful manufacture after police found a running still four mash barrels and whisky in his home. Louis suspended from the force and both men released on bond.
Padlocks and deputy marshals barred entry to nine Thompson Salvin Corporation white light cabarets in New York. The doors were sealed for one year under the prohibition padlock statute after a grand jury was dismissed with consent to submit. The venues include Palais Royale Plantation Moulin Rouge Montmarte Club Royale Balmoral Barn Club Four Hundred Club and Club Gallant.
Howard Carter, famed discoverer of King Tutankhamen’s tomb, will speak at Emery Auditorium in Cincinnati on May 26. He will present motion pictures and stills from the tomb in the Valley of the Kings, with profits supporting the Cincinnati Excavation Fund for projects in Nemea Greece.
Walter Dempsey 40 of Newport Ky narrowly escaped serious harm when his closed car was struck by a northbound Louisville and Nashville freight train at Fifth and Saratoga streets. The vehicle was wrecked beyond repair and Dempsey, who ran a Fifth and Columbia streets store, suffered only minor bruises. He was treated at home by doctor George Sauter. Witnesses called it a remarkable escape.
Kentucky Democrats endorse William G. McAdoo for president and praise party harmony after Senator Oscar Underwood of Alabama withdraws. Governor Fields and Senator Stanley condemn national policy while predicting McAdoo will secure nomination and a united delegation.
In Cleveland on May 14, six month old Raymond Befoor was killed and his mother Mrs. Louise Befoor fatally injured when struck by an automobile as she stepped from a street car with the infant in her arms.
Mrs. Lee Ziegler, 27, died of burns at Massillon after a kerosene can exploded at her home near Shiloh. Her husband and three young children witnessed the incident last night.
Arizona disinfects about 500 railroad passengers daily at seven cities to prevent foot and mouth disease. Passengers clean shoes with provided implements and walk through a thirty-foot trough saturated with disinfectant, then continue their journey without quarantine delays.
In Baltimore on May 14 the Republican State Convention declared overwhelmingly for President Coolidge and instructed the state's delegation to cast all nineteen votes for him at Cleveland. The platform praised the national administration and condemned waste and corruption, while endorsing the current efforts to punish wrongdoing.
William Gibbs McAdoo told Michigan Democrats that reaction in both parties threatens the country and only a triumph of progressive Democratic forces can uproot corruption. He urged support for Great Lakes waterway transport, a special Congress session on agriculture, lower freight rates, repeal of the Fordney McCumber tariff, and a constitutional child labor amendment.
Washington May 14 Senate Daugherty Committee exonerates Senator Wheeler amid charges over fees in claims cases. Remus ordered to testify by wire from Atlanta Penitentiary as part of probes into whisky interests and connections to prominent figures. The hearing also probes George L Miller land issues and Edwin Harreld’s remarks on DOJ action.
The Senate committee findings clear Senator Burton Wheeler of Montana, exonerating him of any improper gain from prosecuting Campbell oil land claims before the Interior Department. The four to one vote supports the majority view that Wheeler did not receive or seek compensation and that his Montana litigation work stayed within state matters.
Secretary Hughes stated he had nothing to do with the sale of the Martha Washington to an Italian company. He recalled past consultations before his state department tenure but said control of the matter rested with the Shipping Board and the State Department under others.
President Coolidge met with House leaders to review the immigration bill fixing July 1 1924 as the Japanese exclusion date. Leaders expect quick Senate action and a possible House rejection of the conference report despite broad support. Republican insurgents oppose quotas based on race after 1926 and parts of the Seaman’s Act, while supporting exclusion.
