Special Dispatch reports actress Jessie Bartlett Davis died at 6:30 AM in Chicago from heart disease caused by nephritis. She rose to prominence with the Bostonians, later moved to vaudeville, and last appeared in Francis Wilson's Erminie. She was married to Will Bee, a prominent theatrical figure.
Rain swollen Ohio River at Cincinnati threatens riverside property as levels climb toward 50 feet. Rivermen report drifting logs and debris from Big Sandy and Kanawha. Some streets and basements flooded while ship traffic concentrates at Newport side and beyond.
A Santa Fe Passenger Train No 17 was wrecked a mile east of Emporia Kansas at 2 30 this morning after wreckers removed spikes and fishplates on an inside curve. Six passengers were injured two likely to die. Names include James Eager J O Rice Nate Hendricks L Cooper E A Taylor F A Grover. Passengers formed relief crew. no crew to wreckers.
Cambridge Ohio May 14 David Donner Taylor a politician editor and Republican candidate for Lieutenant Governor died this afternoon from pneumonia. Born July 24 1842 in Guernsey County he served in the state legislature and authored the masher standard time and students hazing laws. Known as Guernsey Taylor he was postmaster of Cambridge from 1875 under four presidents and is survived by his widow three sons and a daughter.
Captain Dravo holds services on the Queen City as the Congressional Committee on Rivers and Harbors travels from Cincinnati to Carrollton Kentucky. The 90 mile run shaves hours off schedule with a perfect day ashore in Madison Indiana and a river-side drive enjoyed by Cincinnatians aboard for the Cairo voyage. The party includes J L Rhinock and Burton absent on urgent business with Cassidy noting a July river inspection from Cincinnati to Cairo.
A Boston woman posing as Carlotta wife of Maximilian vanished after collecting about 40000 from Italian residents on the claim of rightful heir to the Austrian throne. She maintained a royal court with aides and promised nobles and estates to supporters. Police seek her and her entourage across the North End.
Fierce fighting on Jolo between Moro Chief Pala and U S troops under Major General Leonard Wood has killed 300 Moros and 7 Americans. Pala, surrounded in a swamp, reportedly ordered massacres after a deserter case.
Chicago police expect a broad exposure of professional slugging methods after the Charles J. Carlstrom murder. Fourteen assaulted or intimidated by hired gangs linked to striking unions are under investigation. Leader Charles Gilhooley confessed, naming crews tied to slugging plots in multiple industries. Two more arrests were made of union executives Frank Novak and John Heiden.
