Special cable from Lourdes reports 40 000 pilgrims and attendants at the shrine as trains bring thousands from Paris and other cities. Priests assist arrivals, arrange quarters, and comfort the sick while a dying young woman is carried from the platform to the grotto. Despite misery, faith remains a guiding beacon.
The Catholic Knights of America at their Kansas City convention voted unanimously to endow a chair at the Catholic University of America, likely in English literature. This follows a previous year endowment of American history by the Knights of Columbus, bringing total chairs endowed to seventeen since the university’s founding.

National Synod of the Reformed Presbyterian Church will convene in Mansfield from May 31 to June 6 with delegates from across the United States and Canada, about 200 in number. Moderator is Prof. W. P. Johnston of Beaver Falls Geneva College. Synodical clerk is Rev. F. M. Foster of New York. Proceedings will be largely legislative with several addresses by church leaders.
Henry Wyatt was jailed in Tazewell County on an indictment charging him as a murderer in the Delavan killing of Perry Green two years ago. John Blackburn and N. C. Dewey are also charged. Blackburn is jailed, Dewey at large. The case ties to a card game dispute and a corpse left on the Alton tracks.
In Belmont Ohio workers at the Wheeling Steel and Iron Company mills and blast furnace receive a 10 percent wage increase. The raise applies to Top Mill BelMont Mill La Belle Mill Wheeling West Virginia and Benwood Blast Furnace at Martins Ferry Ohio and goes into effect tonight and Monday.
Vienna reports Johann Engels and his daughter Juliane arrested for a robberies scheme targeting drummers on trains. The pair ran a training school where young women were taught to drug men with cigarettes to steal wallets watches and cash. The daughter confessed the father trained her since childhood and used a gang of attractive pupils for planned robberies.
London May 14 A jeweler Westley Richards is arrested on suspicion of receiving stolen Bank of England notes linked to the Paris Bank robbery of January 23. Two men were taken. one discharged. Richards allegedly offered stolen notes at a Strand tailor and a clerk aided the change. Richards bet heavily at Newmarket soon after.
In New York on May 14 1899 Rev Dr Charles A Briggs suspended for heresy by the Presbyterian Assembly was ordained a priest of the Episcopal Church at the pro Cathedral on Stanton Street. The ceremony lasted through the afternoon with Bishop Potter presiding and no protests.
Jay Cooke of Philadelphia arrives at Gibraltar Island opposite Putin Bay for a two week stay at his island castle. He aims to fish the gamey bass in Lake Erie waters near the Bass Islands and is highly esteemed by residents for his generosity and deeds.
Senator Foraker, passing through Parkersburg en route to Washington, says an extra session of Congress is unlikely though possible. He notes his new gas company offers cheaper, better gas for Cincinnati but cannot confirm securing a franchise yet. he returns to Cincinnati on Wednesday.
Madrid May 14 The Minister of Finance Marquis Vitlaversie issues a decree closing immediately the registers of foreign bondholders to determine who may receive external debt coupons. The move aims to stop frauds by which Spaniards transfer claims to gain gold to which foreigners are entitled.
Washington May 14 1900 The papal bull declaring 1900 a jubilee year is expected to be announced in churches worldwide. Jubilees occur every twenty five years but this one is seen as more universal and marks the century's end with Pope Leo XIII nearing his ninetieth birthday.

War Department dispatch from Manila dated May 14 reports insurgents attacked Spanish troops at Zamboanga on May 11 with quick firing guns and captured arms. A Spanish general and two officers were wounded, the garrison was besieged, water supply cut off, and troops were calling for relief. Casualties among the insurgents are described as few.
Major General Otis reports from Manila on May 14 that Lawton has captured Ildefonso and San Miguel and presses the enemy with 1,500 troops under Kobbe moving up Rio Grande with gunboats and canoes. MacArthur holds San Fernando to guard the area while Aguinaldo signals possible peace talks and a commission to Manila is to be arranged.
In Hot Springs Arkansas on May 14 secret service agents raided Bathhouse Row to stop abuses of free baths and drummer solicitation. Managers were summoned for questioning and under surveillance of all houses to enforce the law.
Port Clinton Ohio May 14 Five hundred million fish eggs were collected and propagated by the large government fish hatchery on Put in Bay Island this spring. Two hundred million were gathered in the fall of last year. The total for the past fiscal year seven hundred million is the largest amount ever collected by a government fish hatchery of the lakes.
The Filipino Commission in Madrid issues a manifesto to the press saying the Filipino Government will reject any peace talks based on autonomy and will demand U S fulfillment of Spain war pledges. It denies Antonio Luna's surrender and claims Major General Lawson is routed, with hospitals filled by Americans and many in subordination.
Acting under orders from the National Democratic Committee about one hundred Chicago platform Democrats met in New York City and prepared to organize the city and state to defy Tammany Hall. A twenty member committee was formed to coordinate five boroughs and a Bryan Chicago platform delegation will be sent to the next National Convention.
Bellaire May 14. John Lemon a prominent Colerain resident was arrested for fraudulently obtaining a government pension. His name appeared on the roster and was not changed while Beazle served after the late war. Lemon received monthly benefits and is out on $500 bail.

A schooner named Nelson sank with ten souls aboard. only the captain escaped. Rescue efforts were underway as authorities investigated the sinking and secured the wreck site.
SAULT STE. MARIE Mich May 14 The schooner Nelson laden with coal foundered in Lake Superior off Grand Marais after a gale of fifty miles per hour sinking with all hands except Captain Hagany of Toledo wife and child. The Folsom Mitchell and Nelson in tow of A Folsom faced ice and high seas as they sought White Fish Point. The Nelson sank in 200 feet with no chance to launch a yawboat.
The wreck of the schooner Nelson on Lake Superior causes gloom in Toledo as crew members from the port are identified. Captain Andrew Hagany sailing master, his wife, and their two year old daughter are among the lost. Other crew members shipped from nearby Ashtabula include C. Lewis T. Sherbrook and Andy Lavella.
Cleveland ex President reportedly fishing at Middle Bass Island in Lake Erie when rumors of his death circulated from the East and West. Authorities found no basis for the claim as Middle Bass Island remains connected by cable to Sandusky and no message was received.
The steamer TM Arrow brought an excursion party to Sandusky on May 14 at 10 45 pm. Passengers reported meeting ex President Cleveland at Middle Bass Island as late as 9 15 pm, and noting he has not been ill at any moment since arriving.
A telegram to Mrs. Grover Cleveland in Princeton New Jersey confirms Grover Cleveland is reported all right after a message from Sandusky Ohio.
The steamer State of New York arrived in Toledo Ohio at 4 P M on May 14. Harvey Scribner a prominent local attorney was seen with Mr Cleveland at that time and reported to be well.
