A U S letter to the Imperial German Government denounces acts at sea including the Lusitania sinking and other attacks on American vessels. It urges direct action to protect neutral rights and noncombatant lives, noting Germany's war zone proclamation and demanding accountability.
Washington reports the long awaited note detailing U S demands to Germany to stop attacks on unarmed merchant ships and to disavow, repair, and prevent recurrence of such acts. Wilson prepared the document with his Cabinet, sent to Berlin via Ambassador Gerard, and circulated to London Paris and Petrograd.
A World War I era report describes Turkish actions sinking a British battleship. hundreds are reported dead as seas claimed many lives while the nation mourns the loss of sailors and officers.
The Times correspondent reports the eastern Gallipoli Peninsula in Allied hands with reinforcements and guns being landed. Heavy German casualties are noted in other battles, with the Allies pressing forward.
London reports King Constantine is unable to attend state business due to pleurisy after a week of illness. Churchill announces the British battleship Goliath torpedoed in the Dardanelles with heavy losses, part of wider Allied losses including Irresistible and Ocean earlier, as massive Gallipoli combat and Western Front fighting continue with heavy casualties for Britain and Allied forces.
Reports from Nogales Sonora dated May 13 state Yaqui Indians attacked a six five American colony near Esperanza south of Guaymas killing three and wounding several others. Governor Jose Maytorena ordered 500 troops to aid Americans as refugees report appalling conditions and widespread looting by Yaqui and bandits.
Paris May 13 Guy de Cassagnac director of L Autorite and Second Lieutenant of reserves is cited in army orders for bravery and contempt of death. Wounded he led his company until a second bullet felled him and he chose to die in Alsace rather than be carried off.
Detroit May 13. After long talks between city officials, the Detroit United Railway and striking employees no agreement was reached to end the street car strike that began today. Only a few inter urban cars ran. no city cars operated.
An official London announcement says the King as sovereign orders immediate removal of The Emperor of Austria The German Emperor The King of Wuertemberg The Grand Duke of Hesse Prince Henry of Prussia the Duke of Saxe Coburg and Gotha and the Duke of Cumberland from the Knights of the Order of the Garter.
Viscount Haldane told the House of Lords that Britain might be forced to consider conscription. He said the volunteer system could be hard to sustain until normal conditions return, given the nation's tremendous necessities.
Delegates to the World Court Congress applauded as Dr John Wesley Hill warned hyphenated Americans to support the flag. The dinner scene featured an American flag, and the Star Spangled Banner as many wept. A commission to draft a world court plan was named including James Brown Scott Henry Lane Wilson and Bainbridge Colby with Mr Hammond as member.
May 13 in Queenstown a tug brought in six women, two boys, and an infant’s bodies from the Lusitania disaster. Alfred G. Vanderbilt’s secretary offers a $1000 reward for the body of Mr. Vanderbilt. Severe weather halted search efforts and raised fears of further scattering of remains.
United States District Judge John J. Clarke granted an injunction restraining collection as Rockefeller defeated the Cuyahoga County Assessors who sought over 1.5 million dollars in tax on a 300 million dollar stock and bond valuation.
Governor Brumbaugh signed the Cox child labor bill in Harrisburg. The act takes effect January 1, 1916 and bans work for children under 14 in any occupation except newsboys.
National Committee of the Socialist party took a stand against war in Chicago. An amendment to the party constitution says any member elected to office who votes for war appropriations shall be dropped by the party. Debate raised questions about covering military actions.
