City officials study two year estimates with Huntsville seeking voter approval for an additional tax levy under the 1 percent law. Several departments request raises led by the health board and administration. new offices and higher salaries, including a complaint clerk, departmental examiner, and multiple inspectors, appear in the projected 1913 expenditures.
In Chihuahua on May 13 Gonzales Enrile, Orozco’s financial agent, was stabbed and shot but not fatally wounded. Assailants remain unknown amid political intrigue linked to Vasquez Gomez and Diaz-era factions. Enrile’s enemies and alleged financiers of the rebel movement are discussed as tensions rise.
In New York May 13 deaf defendants and witnesses clashed in the Tombs police court as Miss Nora Sullivan and pressman Henry Slecker faced a charge after an umbrella attack. Interpreter Sergeant Quackenbos struggled to follow rapid sign language and the magistrate dismissed the case after chaos and a medical fainting spell.
In Kenton on May 13, William Thrail shot and wounded his wife before killing himself at their home. The couple had been living apart for four weeks and jealousy is cited as a motive.
John P. Brennan, Urbana Democrat and cashier of the state treasury, announced his candidacy to succeed Treasurer D S Creamer. Creamer, in his second term, strongly endorses Brennan for the nomination.
Daniel G. Reid a key organizer of the American Tin Plate venture proved fuzzy on details of the underwriting and plant values as he testified in the government suit against the Steel corporation. Judge Dickinson likened him to a horse fed to water that would not drink. Reid noted his limited recall spurring anticipation that Judge Moore would testify.
William Elmer Harmon, brother of aviator Clifford B. Harmon, via the civic trust committee, arranged the purchase of a $10,000 tract in Lebanon Ohio for a baseball park tennis court and swimming pool. Earlier he provided $15,000 for a gymnasium for young men now under construction.
Minneapolis May 13 The general conference of the Methodist Episcopal church may overrule the committee on state of the church but for now Paragraph 260 remains. A 100 to 51 vote kept the section prohibiting dancing card playing and related amusements as church law despite a subcommittee push to modify it.
Dr. James R. Day of Syracuse University led a subcommittee pushing to drop a paragraph and a minority report was promised. Delegates debated retention of the paragraph with Dr De Fi Yong speaking through an interpreter. A J Wallace urged striking the catalogue of prohibitive amusements as delegates prepared tonight for remarks by Patten Eaton McFarland Spencer Cooke Jennings and others on church publishing concerns. The committee urged forming a five member commission to study losses from periodical sales and report next April.
James Hawkins, 60, Negro, of 634 West Ninth Avenue, was attacked by a bus dog owned by Henry Luken at Four 1 Avenue and John Street at 9 yesterday morning. He suffered four wounds on his lower limbs which a doctor cauterized.
Washington May 15 The defense of Judge Archbald during impeachment hearings revealed a staged trap to catch him in an alleged transaction with the Erie railroad while lighterage cases were pending. W P Boland of Scranton orchestrated Williams as principal witness to solicit Archbald in the Katydid option deal. May AVAL May coal manager and Erie officials are expected to testify next as Williams’ testimony proceeds. M J Martin of Scranton joined Archbald’s counsel today.
Miss Ceclia Farley of the state board of vital statistics and Jerome Quigley were arrested after a shooting in a city park that left Alvin E. Zollinger, an ad department employee, wounded. Farley claimed Zollinger had threatened her and had followed them after a walk invitation. Zollinger allegedly then attempted suicide.
In Madrid the chamber of deputies endorsed Premier Canalejas' ministry by a 180 to 73 vote, the largest majority in the history of the present cortes, with one exception.
J C Wonders of Bellefontaine was removed as state highway commissioner by Governor Harmon to install a Democrat. He then secured a higher grade position in the United States public roads department after passing the civil service test.
The Commercial Tribune notes ongoing interest in the postal card ballot for president with President Taft in Ohio and Colonel Roosevelt expected to run. Hamilton County voters continue mailing preferences as ballots arrive in large numbers.
The U S House adopted a joint resolution for constitutional change to allow direct popular election of U S senators. The measure, previously Senate approved, moves to the president for signing. Southern members led by Georgia, Mississippi and Louisiana opposed, citing federal supervision of elections and fears of negro domination.
New York May 13 Roosevelt campaigners plan to gather at the Congress Hotel Chicago to back Col Roosevelt. Munsey argues Roosevelt will be nominated and elected, faulting Taft’s leadership and urging a progressive administration. He dismisses any Taft support of Roosevelt as inconsequential.
The senate approved an amendment by Senator Crawford to appropriate 15000 for a buffalo preserve at Wind Cave, with the bill’s consideration to be finished tomorrow. A cotton tariff revision bill may be dropped from the current session as Democratic leaders, meeting under Chairman Underwood, signal no rush to pass further tariff measures.
Youngstown Ohio May 13 warrants served today upon nineteen leading business and professional men charged with renting houses for immoral purposes. Special indictments were returned.
Representative Dyer of Missouri introduced a bill protecting the rights of the Moose Owls Eagles Elks and other lodges to their exclusive use of names. The measure bars use of the mails by any organization named after a bird or animal previously adopted by another order.
In Manila on May 13 a Roosevelt supporter convention selected Squires and Judge Waite as contesting delegates to the Chicago convention. They are pledged to back Roosevelt or any other progressive candidate for the nomination.
In Minneapolis on May 13 the Fifth congressional district selected Stanley Washburn and A A D Rahn as delegates to the Republican national convention, instructed to back Roosevelt.
Asheville North Carolina May 3 The Tenth district elected Dr A T Pritchard and R H Staton as delegates to the Chicago convention and instructed for Roosevelt.
Greensboro May 13 The Eighth district elected delegates to the Republican national convention. The delegates named are M. N. Harshaw and W. H. Hobson and they are instructed for Roosevelt.
Greensboro North Carolina May 13 second district delegates to the Republican national convention chose D W Patrick and George W Staunton as Roosevelt supporters.
Colonel Roosevelt departed New York at 6 34 tonight on the Pennsylvania railroad heading for Ohio where he will open his campaign with a rally in Canton. He spent the forenoon at Sagamore Hill and returned to the city in the afternoon to board the train.
Paris dispatch reports General Nazarov AgaN, Persian minister to France from 1896 to 196, died in Paris today. The veteran diplomat, long linked with Tehran and Paris relations, passed away at his residence.
President Taft on a campaign swing through Ohio rails at Theodore Roosevelt and urges voters in Marietta May 21 primaries. He blasts the Roosevelt stance as dangerous and millennial, contrasts him with Lincoln, and rallies crowds in Dennison Uhrichsville St Clairsville Bellaire and Bridgeport. The Steubenville stop features a pyrotechnic entrance and a rousing balcony speech.
President Taft in an afternoon address assailed Theodore Roosevelt as an intense egotist and demagogue criticizing him for urging public leadership. Taft aimed to rally at the station after a program change from the opera house, facing a large crowd with frequent interruptions and applause.
