Typhoon N. defeats Ornament to win the twenty third Kentucky Derby as heavy track conditions hinder both contenders. Ornament swerved into the mud late, while Typhoon held firm, earning the purse and wreath amid a subdued, muddy stretch run.
Crowds thronged Louisville for the Derby of 07 with a huge turnout at Churchill Downs. Tuesday rain left the track muddy but by post time the surface dried to dust. Descriptions focus on the vast infield crowd, society gowns, and the bustling spectacle as Derby Day unfolds.
The fourth annual May Festival in Ann Arbor opens tomorrow night with renowned soloists Calve Frances Dunton Wood Katherine Bloodgood Jennie May Spencer Barron Berthald J H McKinley Campanaria Meyn Gardner Slamson Alberto Jonas and Hermann Zeitz performing. The Boston Festival Orchestra and University Choral Union of 300 voices will be conducted by Emil Mollenhauer and Albert A. Stanley.
The Society of Tammany held its annual meeting in Tammany Hall. Hugh J. Grant and others were elected Sachems with Thomas L. Fellner named Grand Sachem and Charles Welde Father of the Council. Officers include John B. McGoldrick Secretary Peter F. Myer Treasurer Wm H. Dobbs Sagamore and Daniel M. Donegan Wishinkie. Maurice F. Holohan was re elected official scribe.
Columbus May 12 The fight for the Franklin County delegation over the gubernatorial nomination pits supporters of Congressman John J Lentz against Allen W Thurman. Lentz has been working to secure pledged support and may open headquarters if favored by responses to letters. Local and state leaders move to block Lentz including possible withdrawals and new nominees like Judge Allen Smalley of Upper Sandusky.
Cape Town dispatch reports the Transvaal Government replying to Secretary of State for the Colonies Jos eph Chamberlain with a defiant tone. It asserts the right to demand arbitration on disputed questions and to pass the alien immigration law, stating arbitration is the best path to settle the dispute if the right is challenged.
In Moberly Missouri Charles Martin aged 17 shot Walter Hager aged 20 in the front yard of Allen Terrills home after a domestic dispute. Hager who planned to marry Enid Terrill died in her arms. Martin says self defense. Hager had no weapon.
Lagrange Indiana May 12 The law allowing intermediate sentences by Indiana judges is headed for higher courts as Judge Van Fleet appeals the case of C W Wilson a forged check swindler. Wilson received two sentences in Elkhart Circuit Court on two indictments ranging from two to fourteen years on the first count and one to seven on the second.
Washington May 12 The Ways and Means Committee of the Universal Postal Congress today practically completed the preliminary consideration of the amendments proposed each by proponents.
Senators Foraker Davis and Morgan lead a Foreign Relations subcommittee into full access of State Department correspondence on Cuba. They seek to reveal all facts before reporting how to treat Morgan’s war recognition resolution, amid resistance from Secretary Sherman and White House disputes.
A twelve year old girl, daughter of farmer Fred Bui, was assaulted near Evansville by an unknown man. She died that evening as posses and authorities, including a sheriff with bloodhounds, hunted for the killer. A special county session offered a reward for the guilty party.
Jesse Greenwood, a wire drawer at the Salem mill, hanged himself at his Stanley avenue home in Findlay Ohio at noon. Four years earlier his wife suffered a fit that led to the smothering of their baby, she became insane, and later died in the Toledo asylum. Greenwood had fallen into drinking.
The semi annual meeting of the Ohio State Association of Embalmers in Columbus is devoted to lectures at Starling Med College. A bill will be presented at the next Legislature to form a State Board of Embalmers with four undertakers and one Health Board member.
A Herald dispatch from Beuna Ayres reports United States Minister William L. Buchanan launching an inquiry into the fate of the American sailing vessel Joseph F. Loubat missing between Beuna Ayres and Terra del Fuego. Captain T. H. Connors commanded the Loubat carrying Moses Y. Ransome and several Cleveland men in a Gold search.
Ohio State Homeopathic Society elected officers at Akron convention. W A Goohegan of Cincinnati was chosen president. Other officers include F O Hart West Unity as second vice president R B Carter Akron as secretary T T Church Salem as treasurer D W Beckwith Cleveland as necrologist and H E Beebe Sidney along with a board of censors. Next annual meeting set for Columbus.
At the Newark meeting the wing directors were elected for one year: Joshua Brown James Butler John Doerhoeffer and Ernst Kmeisser. The annual report for the year ended December 31 1896 showed a balance of plus 5 884 548 against a surplus of 600 572 for the prior year. Net earnings were 3 593 197 and a balance after dividends and charges 177. The surplus totals 5 464 548 and a 20 percent script end for 3 580 000 on the common. Messrs Marburg and Ginter resigned and were replaced by Iman Ellis and J D Cobb. Kmeisser succeeded Galil who resigned. Brown Butler and Doerhoefer were re elected.
The Prison Investigating Committee heard testimony on mistreatment at Frankfort Penitentiary. Millard Wilson said he was whipped for not finishing broom tasks, while Fannie Harvey testified to brutal lashings and harmed health. An opposing witness denied brutality, noting good food and discipline.
At daybreak a mob of about twenty hung Mollie Smith and Mandy Franks in Unts ville Alabama near a road between Jeff and Huntsville. Mollie was arrested crossing the Tennessee line. Mandy was captured at home and reportedly confessed. The Kelly family had earlier suffered poisonings. Joshua Kelly died and others survived.
Miss Nettie Leib a 28 year old Akron real estate dealer died tonight from a mixture of chloral and carbolic acid. She was arrested yesterday on embezzlement charges of 106 dollars from Mrs Rosa Albertson of Orrville, for whom she acted as agent. She belonged to the Methodist Church and led the Ladies Aid Society of the Sons of Veterans for years.
Anderson Indiana May 12 Hon W T Durbin announces plans to build a church to advance Methodist missions.
In Harrodsburg Kentucky on May 12 Mercer County braces for further raids as toll gates are fortified. Colonel E H Gaither and Judge Cardwell defend gates with armed guards and electric lights. Pinkerton detective Kimball has secured arrests of raiders and aims for grand jury indictments. Witnesses including Mrs Grant Cook testify about toll gate destruction.
In Boston Judge Sheldon heard the case of the New England Theosophical Society versus the city. The society occupies No 24 Mt Vernon Street and claims exemption as a religious body. Some rooms are used for lodging by members, raising whether such occupancy propels its religious work. The case is a test matter and is under advisement.
Washington reports the President has nearly decided to decline all invitations to attend Decoration Day exercises on May 31. The move marks a notable stance on a major national observance as officials await formal confirmation.

Baton Rouge reports that Superintendent Greiff of the Mississippi Valley Railroad expects the crevasse break to close by daylight tomorrow, weather permitting. A severe rain storm struck the area this afternoon as crews work to seal the gap.
Nashville May 12 Red Men from five tribes paraded to Centennial grounds, war paint and Uncle Sam figure highlighted the event. A staged Custer massacre battle by the pale faces drew strong crowds as the state militia represented Custer's command. Cincinnati painter Hopkins Smith has works at the Art Museum. Visitors listed include Mrs J H S Ellis and others from Indiana Ohio and Tennessee.

Ligonier Indiana May 12 Henry Lang aged 78 and Mrs Henry Deeter 72 of Milo Michigan wed near Wilmot after fifty years apart. Each had vow婚 and bereaved of spouses, correspondence rekindled their long separation and today they renewed their vows in a quiet ceremony.
