Senate approves tax relief measure by a 69 to 15 vote after stripping Mellon proposals. Desertion by Lodge on world court weakens GOP unity as leaders abandon hopes for preferred terms and pivot to compromise.
Washington May 10 The administration battles Congress over major proposals amid clashes on the World Court and immigration and tax legislation. Lodge opposes the Court plan, while Coolidge seeks to avoid hurting U S prestige. McNary Haugen and disarmament talks loom as party realignments shape the Democratic race. Key figures include Coolidge Mellon Lodge Root Hughes and McAdoo Smith Davis Ralston Underwood.
Mennonite settlers in Western Chihuahua mobilize arms amid bandit threats near Guerreo and San Antonio. In past clashes along the West and South Chihuahua agrarian conflict, guards were wounded and two farmers killed at Parameño. Governor Talavera pledges support to defend property.
Senate approves a broad tax cut package 69 to 15, sending the measure to a House-Senate conference. Leaders warn President Coolidge may veto if the Mellon plan is not preserved and altered in conference. The Senate revenue bill diverges from the House version on income tax schedule corporation tax publicity of returns and estate taxes. Both chambers agree on a 25 percent cut on this year income taxes and 25 percent cut on earned incomes with House setting a 20000 maximum and Senate 10000. Other excise tax reductions and repeals apply with rate changes effective thirty days after enactment.
Conferees report to the House on July 1 1924 as the effective date for the immigration exclusion section. The agreement rejects Coolidge’s plan to negotiate abrogation before exclusion begins. Senate version favored immediate applicability. House opposition stands. White House offers no further moves on conferees or final approval.
New York May 10. The Cuban Consul-General in New York said he had received word from Washington that 2000 rebels surrendered in Santa Clara province. Havana reports could not verify the claim and officials said they had heard nothing. A War Department notice listed fifteen surrendering men.
Secretary Weeks approved a third Cuban request to buy ordnance materials from surplus War Department stocks valued at $8,000. A Cuban embassy statement in Washington denies a Berlin cable claiming sugar interests fueled Cuba unrest.
Saltsville Va May 10 Mrs Rosa St Clair 36 shot and killed her husband Robert St Clair and their two year old daughter then fatally shot herself in a murder suicide shocker in Saltville.
Forest fire in Pridham Canyon, Chiricahua Mountains, rekindled after a brief extinguish, prompting a telegram requesting troops to fight the blaze at Camp Harry J. Jones. Local reports place the origin early Tuesday morning and the renewed outbreak now under military attention.

An owner seeks to sell a poolroom, a Decatur furniture load is wanted, a white woman is sought as cook, a long hall runner is for sale, a private party wants a small modern house to rent.
A 20 year old Oakley woman Helen Gaele confessed to stealing a dress, three other dresses, an expensive fur choker and three rings from city stores. Detected when a price tag showed from her ermine coat she wore during the thefts. Two petit larceny charges were filed.
George Scott former president of Otterbein College marked his 77th birthday by a 28 mile round trip walk from Westerville to Columbus and back He reached the capital in three and a half hours including a noontime meal at a downtown restaurant This record reflects his longtime fitness and faith in walking as a daily habit
Geneva May 10 The Lodge Senate measure to establish a new international court of justice astonished League circles. World Court adherents doubt abandoning the present court for an untried tribunal. The current court is open to the United States without membership with Judge Moore on its bench. The budget likely to be approved at $400000. Five new cases expected at June session.
Havre France May 10 Countess Salm von Hoogstraeten nee Millicent Rogers and her father H H Rogers of New York sailed for the United States. The Count Ludwid von Hoogstraeten was not with them and is believed to be in Paris. Rogers denied discussing Austrian government sanction for the marriage and said his daughter would visit America with him.
A 40 year old woman from Marietta Georgia was killed when a taxicab she rode in collided with an eastbound car at Pearl and Lawrence streets. The driver William Holker and another man were involved. the woman died en route to General Hospital. A bystander, John Kelley, was struck while crossing Eastern avenue and Kemper lane and suffered a serious leg injury. Police termed the crash unavoidable.
Four year old Dorothy Yelton of Covington Kentucky sustained a serious fracture and bruises when the auto carrying her family skidded off a road near Miamisburg Ohio and rolled down a small embankment. Her parents were uninjured.
Five miners trapped on the 1,600 foot level of the Empire Zinc mine in Gilman after a sulphite ore cave-in. Superintendent A H Buck directs 30 rescuers to drive an emergency drift through debris to reach them before gas overcomes the trapped men.
An armed bandit and a female accomplice robbed the August Hoyler jewelry store in Buffalo. They seized two trays of engagement rings valued at $5,000, shot clerk Rufus Eller in the head, and escaped via a waiting cab with two other men fleeing through crowded streets.
Campbell County Klan members allege liquor and gambling law violations in Newport and nearby areas led to an attempted break‑in on the second floor of the Fennell Building in Newport. Armed guards will patrol the Klan HQ as investigators plan to present evidence to the Campbell County Grand Jury.
Newburgh New York May 10 Peter Van Nest aged 72 killed himself by blasting powder in a bedroom at his home, the explosion blasting rocks and shattering windows in the neighborhood.
Washington May 10 Plans to add at least seventy five men to the wet force in the House were announced by W H Slayton head of the association against the prohibition amendment He said the association would aid present Senate and House members to retain their seats A 25 member Campaign Committee will back wet candidates Hinckley National Secretary will campaign in western New York and Northwestern Ohio amid petitions and activity aimed at modifying the Volstead act
Alphonse Louis Jerome de Bourbon, a naturalized American born 1884 in Galatz, claims to be the legitimate son of the late King Alphonse XII of Spain. He says he has submitted his rights and honors to the League of Nations and to the Sacred College of Cardinals for settlement, noting the league as the only suitable international authority.
Rioters clashed with robed marchers in Niles Ohio during a klan parade on May 9. Six arrests were made, two people were injured, bricks and missiles flew, a cross was burned and knocked down, and two others faced minor head injuries. Mayor Kistler called disturbances isolated and attributed them to young outsiders. The kon klave drew about 3000 attendees from Niles and nearby cities.
A Pere Marquette freight wrecked the automobile carrying six near Midland Michigan. George Yakle 21 was killed. Injured were Miss Coy Yakle 18 Miss Hester Wolfley 15 Carl Stickley 21 Don Stickley 19 and Rowena Baer 19. All injured except Miss Baer were in hospital.
Mr and Mrs Henry Osterland were killed when their car was struck by a Detroit United Railways interurban. Four others from the Marine City area were injured and expected to die from the grade crossing collision tonight in Marine City Michigan.
Chicago firemen search a crossing near Mayfair Station pulling two survivors from a mangled auto under a moving locomotive. Two others die at hospitals, including Jo seph Marinello, with Captain Sylvester Sullivan Jr among the dead. The train carried weekend passengers to Janesville.
The Norwegian vessel Neko bound from South Georgia to Scotland hit a reef 200 miles north of Rio de Janeiro. The ship is a total loss and its eighty six crew were rescued by the whale oiler Sevilla which took the cargo from the wrecked ship.
Proceedings in United States District Court Covington opened on Langley and co defendants as defense argued the Mortimer testimony is untrue and aimed to dismiss. Gray for Slater attacked Permit 44 270 claiming signatures and letters were fraudulent while Slater denied involvement and Sloneker and Campbell denied dictation. Jury remained to hear further evidence as motions to withdraw the jury were overruled.
