The body of George W. Harris, a wealthy retired distiller, was found on the floor of his Traction Building private office with a bullet wound in his mouth. The death is treated as a deep mystery, with investigators seeking to determine whether it was suicide or foul play.
George W. Harris prominent Cincinnati capitalist and board president shot himself in his 301 Traction Building office after months of ill health and fear of paralysis. Coroner Bauer and Drs. Ratchford and Wolfstein linked heart issues influenza and nervous strain to his deteriorating condition. Harris, a longtime leader on the Board of Sinking Fund Trustees and active reform supporter, left no note and was found by a janitor around 4 PM. His death echoes the recent Bowdle tragedy in the state constitutional circle.

Attorney General Palmerito held the abandoned price stabilizing plan of the Commerce Department's Industrial Board unauthorized and illegal under antitrust law. He said government purchases must use competitive bids and that board participation did not cure the legal defect. Redfield had sought the opinion and accepted the board's resignations amid steel price disputes.

John Shuff and Mrs. Shuff occupy Governor Cox's box while the War Department orders the Rainbow Division parade in Columbus for the day. Cox could not attend. Shuff will travel by train. Notables Goodin Carruthers Deets and John Sherlock are present with companions as spectators.
Paris May 16 The Associated Press reports Count von Brockdorff Rantzau could not stand to deliver his speech for Germany at the Versailles Peace Conference despite being strong enough to speak His secretary says he was kept seated due to a loss of leg control and not a lack of voice The remark about being master of his voice not of his legs drew sharp reproach from English papers and drew attention from the German delegation
The Dutch Government decided to surrender the former German Emperor to the Allied and Associated powers, per a dispatch from The Hague to The National News. The report notes Allied powers’ stance on peace terms and ongoing German objections and League of Nations discussion.
The 90 000 Here Guy Victory Bonds drive in the Cincinnati area over the top and above expectations. The city’s overflow reached 33 percent of the quota before closing, with closing hours showing a golden stream of contributions. The drive’s fourth issue record gauges overall success by final figures.
Washington May 19 The Victory Liberty Loan drive oversubscribed with districts including Minneapolis St Louis Cleveland and Chicago over 100 percent of quotas. Early totals show 85.54 percent of the goal pledged with Cleveland leaping from ninth to third as subscriptions rise by 534 768 000 amid nationwide effort to finish the job.
Senators Whittemore and Parrett accused Governor James M. Cox of pursuing political advantage at the Legislature’s expense. They said his address to Democratic members misled and that parts were false, claiming he aimed to defeat worthy legislation and steer minority members from conscience and reason.
