Special Dispatch reports Mrs. Jefferson Davis widow of the Confederacy President is gravely ill with grip at the Hotel Gerard in New York. At age nearly 80 she faces possible death with daughter Mrs. J Addison Hays summoned from Colorado Springs and physician Robert H. Wylie attending.
A Chesapeake & Ohio New York Limited derailed near Buena Vista Station east of Cincinnati after a broken rail. Sixteen passengers were aboard the derailed sleeper. several were badly injured including Mrs. D. J. McKelvey of Cincinnati and porter Thomas Gray of Richmond. Engineers and crew escaped unharmed as track was quickly replaced and the train continued.
Four Cardinals who dined with Ambassador White at a dinner in Rome in honor of Archbishop Ireland have been rebuked. Cardinal Oreglia, dean of the Sacred College, wrote letters requesting explanations from Vincenzo Vannutelli Satelli Mathieu and Martinelli about their attendance at a diplomat hosted function at the Quirinal. A circular reminding Cardinals of proper conduct followed, and one Cardinal reportedly has not replied. The Vatican notes the move aims to prevent future violations of policy, while the Pope reportedly defended the invitation as acceptable.
Judge Walker issues injunction restraining the Chicago Federation of Musicians from interfering with bands organized as American Musicians of North America. The boycott against nonregular bands has spanned three years and disrupted Labor Day activities.
New York May 10. H H Rogers Jr reports irregularities in stock records of companies tied to Charles L Spier. Spier had speculated in copper stocks and Standard Oil specialties and reportedly was 75000 behind. Investigation continues with rival theories about death by action or accident.
Disturbances of a grave nature occurred in Bologna amid the general strike. Several officers and soldiers were wounded and many buildings including hospitals were stoned. In Rome the strikers attacked shops and broke windows while cavalry occupied chief strategic points.
Madrid May 10 A Ceuta dispatch says several Spanish fishing boats were captured off the Rif coast by Moors. The crews were treated cruelly. Spain will take repressive measures in response.
Tokyo May 10 report that the Japanese Government has adopted a wireless telegraph system from a long running investigation begun in 1900. The new system is described as semi official and entirely independent of other networks.
The unidentified young woman, roughly 25 to 30, was found by two laborers in the East River beneath the Brooklyn Bridge. Her clothing was torn, but a black leather purse remained at the waist with items including a set of false teeth and a Cleveland dated letter addressed to Dear Kate signed Marian.
St Petersburg May 10 Emperor Nicholas opened the Russian Parliament at the winter palace with a concise throne speech. The conciliatory tone urged Parliament to aid peasants and renew the country's vigor, seeking cooperation for reform.
Cody Nebraska May 10 At 6 25 last night an earthquake shock lasting nearly one minute passed through the Elkhorn Valley with the earth seeming to move north and south. No damage is reported though towns within sixty miles telephoned in notices of the tremor.
Special Dispatch reports Carl Schurz, 76, critically ill at his New York home. He briefly seemed near death but later rallied and rested more comfortably as doctors treat a complication of disorders.
Peking May 10. Minister Rockhill informs Chinese officials that the treaty requires U S consultation before opening Mukden and Antung to foreigners. Thomas Simmons, American Consul at Newchwang, has traveled to Mukden and Antung to arrange the openings while China proposes its own regulations.
Secretary Taft and Secretary Root outline US right to intervene if Panama chaos disrupts canal work. Instructions to Governor Magoon emphasize preserving order and deem insurrection a threat to construction. War readiness is ordered without meddling in Panama politics.
In Chicago on May 10 Dowie and Voliva settled on a three member financial affairs committee for Zion City. John A Lewis was chosen by Dowie and Alexander Granger by Voliva. A third member remains to be chosen and the court will reconsider the appointment.
In Cleveland on May 10 the 20,000 workers who walked out across Tower Lake ports returned to work under the prior year’s terms after a nine day strike. The stoppage caused $2,500,000 in direct losses to both strikers and carriers, with indirect costs not included.
A rumor from Durban dated May 10 claims the Natal Rifles suffered a major defeat at Help Makar where a detachment of fifty men was cut up. The report is considered only a rumor.
Naples reports Mt. Vesuvius erupting again though in small measure. Detonations are loud and fear persists of new lava streams forming.
On a voyage from India to the Fiji Islands the steamer Faukla had 124 coolies fall ill with cholera and 61 deaths. The incident occurred off Sydney New South Wales on May 10.
Columbus May 10 The Ohio Penitentiary Board meeting sparked sensational rumors that Gov Pattison would face a challenge to Crayton's credentials and a court action to force board recognition. Crayton, Gillilan and others denied any knowledge of the scheme as members sought to reassure the governor and discuss duties.
