British S H A Green dies at San Marcos. Navy orders all Americans from Tampico area as Constitutionalist forces near attack. Richard Harding Davis and Medill McCormick reportedly jailed in Mexico City.
Twelve transports prepared to carry US troops to Mexico. Two American journalists detained and two Britons freed by police in Mexico City as Huerta delegates depart for a peace conference at Niagara Falls. Fourth and Sixth Brigades at Texas City ordered to be ready for Mexican service. Consul Letcher warns Americans not to return to rebel territory.
AAP special dispatch from Vera Cruz reports Mexican authorities detained American journalist Walter C. Whiffen and Sutton the Washington Post photographer upon arrival in Mexico City, while two English correspondents were released. Hueffer appealed to officials and the British and Brazilian consulates, and the case awaits the chief of police review. Seven Americans traveling from Mexico City described a Mexican lieutenant boasting of an American spy shot near Orizaba.
Santa Barbara, May 9 Charles W Post millionaire cereal magnate killed himself with a rifle concealed in the house. He had been nervous after returning from Rochester and was attended by Mrs Post and nurse Miss Benson. After a morning routine he went to his apartment and died a toe trigger pull.
Major General Daniel Sickles was buried at Arlington National Cemetery after a solemn procession from Union Station. The funeral included cavalry and field artillery escorts, a riderless horse, artillery salutes, rifle volleys, and a service by Rev. Father J. D. Houlihan at Ft. Myer with Civil War veterans in the procession.
A powerful tremor in Sicily near Mt Etna killed at least 250 people and wounded about 350 as rescuers struggle to reach hundreds of uninspected villages from Zaflarana to Aci Reale and Giarra. Linera alone reported 109 dead and 300 injured amid widespread ruin.
In San Francisco on May 9 a large crowd marched to Standard Oil offices in a funeral cortege to mourn the Colorado mining victims and oppose John D. Rockefeller Jr. The procession wore crepe bands and observed silence after an open air meeting led by Rabbi Jacob Nieto and Rev. John M. Jackson denouncing the fatalities as wanton slaughter.

Jefferson D May 9 Ruby WL daughter of Gordon Carter Lenox near here was killed when a country schoolhouse and its window fell on her neck as she attempted to enter for a parcel left during an entertainment. A passing teamster found her body hanging from the window and pulled her free but she died.
The House received a memorandum detailing $2,701,327 in military expenses for Vera Cruz and the Mexican border. Major item is $1,486,074 for transportation, with costs for mounts, subsistence, barracks, water, sewers, and incidental quartermaster expenses. The War Department urged immediate appropriations and noted deficits beyond March estimates.
A Newark fire on Broad Street killed four people including three female servants and Dr. A. B. Young retired Presbyterian clergyman. Young died later in hospital after being dragged from the blaze. Fire cut off escape on the top floor trapping the servants. Several others injured but expected to recover.
