Reports from New York and Liverpool recount the Lusitania catastrophe with 1198 dead as the ship sailed from Liverpool to New York. Notables in social and financial circles grieve while survivors are tallied and private messages indicate some passengers are safe.
It is reported that twelve Ohio residents went down with the Lusitania and are not listed among the rescued. Names and addresses include Victor E. Shields Cincinnati. Mrs. Shields Cincinnati. Ralph Abercrombie Cincinnati. Robert C. Wright Cleveland. Mrs. Elizabeth Horton Cleveland. Mrs. Eunice Kinch Cleveland. William Mostoe Cleveland. Christopher Garry Cleveland. Mrs. William Stephenson Cleveland. infant daughter of Mrs. Stephenson Columbus. William Homegood Toledo. Harry Lindley Toledo. One Ohio passenger, Mrs. Jessie Taft Smith Braceville, is in the rescued list. William M. Bruce Jr. and C. J. Juvenal of Springfield are noted.
Resolutions introduced in the California Senate and Assembly express support for President Wilson’s possible actions after the Lusitania sinking. They urge immediate steps to strengthen the navy to protect national honor and citizens’ lives and are referred to committees.
Lord Charles Beresford in London asserts the Lusitania was torpedoed deliberately to compel the United States into war. He says he predicted the situation in February and warned Germany aimed to draw America into the conflict.
Travelers intending an Atlantic voyage are warned war exists between Germany and Britain and their allies. The war zone covers waters adjacent to Britain. Government vessels flying British or allied flags are liable to destruction in those waters. Travelers sail at their own risk in the war zone.
New York reports many prominent figures feared missing from the Lusitania list released by Clinard Line. Alfred G. Vanderbilt, one of the city’s wealthiest men, stands among those not confirmed saved. Elbert Hubbard and Mrs Hubbard, and Charles Frohman are named among the notable names connected to the disaster.
German actions off the Belgian coast sink the torpedo boat destroyer Maori after a mine detonation. Crusader aided but withdrew under shore battery fire. prisoners reported to Zeebrugge. Also reports say steamers Truro and Don were sunk or damaged by U submarines. Admiralty rejects German claim of sinking a British submarine after airship encounter.
In Queenstown on May 8 a 14 year old Stratford lad recalls the Lusitania disaster. He described torpedoes striking the ship, the frantic scramble for lifeboats, women and children saved, men baling a nearly swamped boat, and the ship sinking bow first amid shrieks and suction. Other survivors, William Brown and H Smethurst, recount securing life belts and boats amid the panic.
Miss Mabel T. Boardman, chairman of the American Red Cross Relief Board, announced that the Red Cross would welcome contributions to a fund for relief of destitute Lusitania survivors and families of the victims.
Former son-in-law William Homer Leavitt and Miss Clara Killins of Springfield were married in Pekin on May 6. Leavitt, an artist, was previously divorced by Ruth Bryan, secretary of state Bryan's daughter.
A New York jury acquitted Mrs Florence Carman of killing Mrs Louise Bailey in Freeport on June 30. The verdict followed a first ballot acquittal amid testimony from Celia Coleman the Carman household maid. Justice Blackmar urged careful weighing of Coleman’s credibility.
