Chateau avenue resident E J McDonough recounts a dramatic midnight struggle on the Central Bridge between this city and Newport. He says he saved Edgar Franklin a woodcarver from leaping to his death, noting a matches box in the jumper's pocket and a plan to continue toward Newport.
Edgar Johnson Franklin formerly lived in Kankakee and worked in a furniture factory. He jumped from the Ohio river bridge Sunday. His antecedents are unknown and he was known to be retired and mentally unsettled. He used the name Edgar Johnson and left Kankakee for Cincinnati about a month ago with nearly no money.

In Washington on May 6 Harry McCann a seaman aboard the Maine filed a $10 000 claim with the Spanish Claims Commission for injuries from the Havana harbor blast Catherine Burns seeks $20 000 for the death of her son a Marine corporal in the same explosion Butler Harwood of New York represents the claimants arguing Spain was responsible through negligence.

Reports from London and Washington detail unofficial talks led by Secretary Hay and Lord Pauncefote on a Nicaragua canal treaty. Key points include US guaranteed neutrality, US sole guarantee, and equal access for all shipping. No formal treaty is expected before Pauncefote’s London departure on June 5.

A false rumor spread from a 15 year old to workmen at Niles Tool Works prompting a run on the Dime Savings Bank in Hamilton Ohio. Depositors, many from the plant, crowded to withdraw but later redeposited after realizing the tale was untrue. Directors pledged the bank’s soundness and personally backed every cent on deposit. A separate report hinted at a conspiracy against board members.
In Indiana the Christian Scientists pledge to contest the Wood medical bill limiting prayer healing. They plan a central hospital in Indianapolis and will press constitutional challenges, backed by funds from John Alexander Dowie, arguing the law interferes with religious conscience while physicians urge enforcement.
Toledo May 6 Judge Pugsley overruled Mrs Herskovitz attorney E P Raymonds bid to force George Herskovitz to pay temporary alimony and attorney fees during divorce proceedings. The court held the movants failed to prove Herskovitz could pay even if ordered. The case featured sharp exchanges and a brief, cordial exchange between the spouses as they passed in court.
In Toledo Ohio on May 6 councilman Robert Allen and Rose Schrader Murray wed in Judge Templeton's courtroom with one witness. A license issue arose after Probate Court found Murray was not legally adopted by Dr. Murray, prompting name changes and court intervention before finally recording Rose Schrader Murray.
In Columbus on May 6 the State Decennial Board of Equalization adopted a new tax schedule after a rushed session, overturning four months of work. Cincinnati opposed the result, but northern cities gained, with Cincinnati kept at local board values and Cleveland raised differently, while omitting a Cincinnati per capita parity.
Three thousand Louisville building trades workers began a strike over hours wages and nonunion labor. Negotiations with contractors failed after employers refused to discharge nonunion men. The union sent a telegram to Chicago seeking a strike leader as contractors plan to hire replacements.
