In Oakdale Tennessee a hotel clerk named Shootman shot two intoxicated Black men, Johnson and a companion, after they threatened guests and declared they would run the hotel. Johnson died on the scene from a heart wound, the companion died later. the clerk was arrested and freed on bond.
The nine month old infant of Dr. and Mrs. P. M. Ashburn completed a world voyage with parents traveling to Manila via New York and returning through San Francisco. The child, aboard 102 days, is cited as making a record for under ten months.
In Bellaire Ohio on May 5, August Ault, 17, was struck by a heavy iron piece while drawing from shear rolls at the Bellaire Steel Company works. The force split his body in two and caused instant death.
Rebels south of Manila attempted a rush through Brigadier General Ovenshine's line last night. The assault failed but a fusillade on the Fourth Infantry lasted hours. Outposts of the Idaho and California regiments were attacked near San Pedro Macati. Major General Lawton remained at Balibag.
Joseph Ballinger, 65, of Martinsville, Indiana, died by suicide early this morning after trying to cut his throat with a knife. He walked barefoot through briars, then hanged himself from a tree fork. his body was found with feet close to the ground. He served in Company K, 1324 Indiana Volunteers, and despondency was cited as the cause.
In Circleville Ohio on May 5 John Parcels a teamster died three hours after an ordinary accident. He was thrown from his horse when it bolted after a fright while he was putting on his coat. Parcels died from nervous shock.
A Samoa account recalls a hero who faced rebels and killed three attackers before he fell in battle. The incident underscores local resistance and sacrifice during the conflict.
Washington May 5 The double hanging of William Strather and Charles Winston at the District Jail passed off quietly. The two men walked to the scaffold at noon and sang during the ascent and after the drop. Both were condemned for the murder of Rose Talbot who left him to live with him. Winston

Swanton reports the death of Atwill Cox at the Pillied Lumber Company factory in Toledo Ohio May 5 a belt pulley guarding a sawdust conveyor slipped Cox reached to replace the belt his blouse caught the drum rope wound around his neck three times then around his body fourteen to fifteen times crushing bones and causing instant death with no one present to help.
Major General MacArthur's division reached San Fernando today to find the town evacuated by rebels. A small detachment remained to cover their retreat by train as MacArthur occupied the burning town without loss.
May 5 in Washington three cabinet members were absent as Postmaster General Smith read a letter from Edward Atkinson of the Anti Imperialistic League. The letter asked permission to send officers and soldiers in the Philippines copies of the league’s interdicted literature. No reply will be given.
Special Dispatch reports Judge A. L. Spears of Jasperer County Tennessee was relieved of his pocketbook at the Union Depot in Chattanooga last evening. The book held $2,500 and the thief had not been caught.
Mr and Mrs Perry Belmont arrive from Washington on the Chesapeake and Ohio express. They stay at the Phoenix Hotel with dinner in room service and plan to visit the country tomorrow to view their Kentucky horses. Hal Headley accompanied them, telegraph boys delivering messages. Local society remains quiet about the Belmont visit.

Postmaster General Smith ruled that only street cars actually carrying mail may display U S Mail signs. The order, to be issued tomorrow, follows a Louisville convention protest by the Amalgamated Association of Street Railway Employees against indiscriminate use of the signs to intimidate workers.
The New York life estate case involves Antonio Enzevio Terry who died in Paris on December 14 1898. The will places all New York property as personal and names executors Francis Edgerton Webb and Maurice Travers. Sibyl Sanderson Swift Terry receives a life estate with restrictions, while the estate in France Cuba and the U S totals about 2 million dollars.
The Duke D Arcos, newly named Minister to the United States, leaves Madrid on May 5 for Washington via Paris to assume his post.
