London reports the British-built B-38 ZR-2, largest rigid airship, nearing completion for the United States. It may fly 6,000 miles at full speed, carries heavy armament and serves as a mobile headquarters with advanced defenses and a telephonic fleet control system.
Wally Reid stars as an ex auto racing driver in Too Much Speed at the Walnut Theater with Agnes Ayres and Theodore Roberts in support. Wallace Reid’s latest vehicle opened a week long engagement and features the added short, Southern Exposure.
Lois Weber produced film Too Wise Wives pleased Grand Opera House crowds yesterday with Claire Windsor Mona Lisa Phillips Smalley and Louis Calhern in principal roles. The plot centers on a wife attempting to vamp another husband and the other’s clever counter scheme.
Alice Brady stars in Out of the Chorus at the Strand Theater for a four day engagement. The absorbing tale follows a chorus girl who marries into a wealthy prominent family and faces deliberate efforts to discredit her. Dustin Farnum to headline Big Happiness later in the week starting Thursday.
Mary Miles Minter stars in The Little Clown as the week’s circus romance attraction. Avery Hopwood wrote the base play and starting Thursday Bessie Barriscale appears in The Breaking Point.
The Palace Theater launches a week long vaudeville engagement headlined by the Dolce Sisters and Neal Helvey. Act list includes Charlie Rogers and Company in The Ice Man, Opera and Uproar by Garlton and Tate, Tex Ellis, Dallas Walker, Jack Denny and Emily Barry in Words and Music, Michon Brothers as bounding athletes, plus a photo feature Something Different starring Constance Binney.
The play poses whether greed and a thief’s lure can spark revenge. Wally Griggs, a groveling bank messenger, chooses to rob the bank under pressure. Monte Blue stars as Wally with Jacqueline Logan as the leading woman in the production.
The Lyric Theater begins a week run of Up in Mary's Attic starring Eva Novak and Harry Gribbon. Novak plays a boarding school girl hiding a baby while married to the athletic instructor, providing humorous possibilities. Gribbon is noted as a top contemporary comedian.
The Zoo hosts a full day of events including grand opera, concerts, ice shows and dancing with a 9 30 pm fireworks display the largest in Zoo history The Cincinnati Summer Orchestra directed by Modesto Alloa performs at 2 30 pm with patriotic numbers The evening features opera selections and Carmen acts after the fireworks Tickets will be sold at the Zoo starting 6 pm
The program opens with two distinct features and a bathing beach fashion show. Mabel Normand stars in What Happened to Rosa a shop girl who believes she is Spanish nobility. Ho Bart Bosworth headlines His Own Law as a Western construction engineer showing his screen talent. Elizabeth Durland Langhorst sings as soloist.
Lieutenant Arthur Emerson famed stunt aviator will launch fireworks from his plane over the Island at 8 30 pm promising a spectacular Fourth display. Spectators saw him loop the loop on a top wing and parachute from 2 500 feet. Stunt flights also at 4 pm for 2 30 boat arrivals.
Festival crowds filled Chester Park for Fourth of July events as free parking drew hundreds along Spring Grove Avenue with Indiana and Kentucky plates. A vaudeville show featured Picard's Seals and Fields Ida Adelia with a funny act by Will Fields and Ida Adelia and a finale by their five year old Eugene Fields. The Heynoffs, Harry Fisher and Company, and Princess Blue Feather provided dancing, cycling, and an Indian novelty act to entertain the attendees.
At Black Mountain coal camp in Pineville Kentucky a company superintendent orders drunk and disorderly workers to attend Sunday services and Sunday school for set weeks or leave camp. The plan, praised by church leaders, has reduced trouble and boosted camp attendance to hundreds at services and classes.
Freemont P. Ward, Government Superintendent, directs construction of a new ex service men s sanitarium on a 5000 acre reservation at Dawson Springs Kentucky. He aims to preserve the forest and maximize views with rerouted roadways while 1200 fruit trees are saved for institutional use. Work accelerates on eight hospital units with contracts pending for the remaining twenty two buildings after Congress approves 750000 for fireproofing. Main buildings expected occupancy in October. Water works include two 300 foot wells and a 100000 gallon elevated tank costing 12000.
The cornerstone for the Sts Peter and Paul School was laid with 2000 spectators present. The first of three buildings will create the largest Catholic educational center west of the Alleghenies, with plans for a high school and a seminary. Reverend Bernard Beckmeyer led the ceremony as Archbishop Moeller, Reverend O Reilly, and Reverend Egan spoke. Over 600 dinners were served by church women.
