President Coolidge speaks at the cornerstone laying in Washington praising America’s diverse population and urging unity through proven institutions. He notes Jews' historic role in independence, their cosmopolitan origins, and the nation’s free institutions as key to progress and national solidarity.
An explosion at Warsaw headquarters of the Independent Peasant party injured editor Trojanovsky amid suspected links to a planned attack near a cathedral during a national holiday service. Police say the device would have caused great harm. Trojanovsky is in serious condition in hospital.
Three teenagers from New Philadelphia died and one survived critical injuries when a westbound express hit their auto at Lock Seventeen, seven miles west of Dennison Ohio. Monroe Correll 16 and Russell Platz 17 died instantly while Harold Crites 17 died at Dennison hospital. Lawrence Knight 18 driver, injured, may die. A depot blocked view. warnings came too late. The Crites family suffered a third tragedy in six years with multiple prior deaths.
A petition filed in the U S District Court in Wheeling seeks a blanket injunction covering twenty nonunion mines in Ohio Brooke and Marshall counties asking protection against activities by the United Mine Workers of America. Named are UMWA leaders and local officials with a May 25 return date at Parkersburg.
Washington report details Basil M. Manly alleging the Department of Justice failed to press criminal action against General Electric for alleged unlawful monopoly in electric light bulbs. He accuses influence from Dwight Morrow of J. P. Morgan & Co. and cites correspondence urging investigation and prosecution.
A clash at Brewer's Field in Berlin Massachusetts as 300 Ku Klux Klan members faced 100 anti-Klan protesters. Stones were thrown from both sides with no injuries reported and police dispersed the crowd.
Detroit May 3 Lake Erie yielded one of nine bodies from the Kelley Island sand schooner wreck off Point Pelee. William G Stackford of Sandusky, captain of the ill fated vessel, died amid deckhouse wreckage. Survivors and rescuers worked through darkness to salvage remains and search the wreck site two miles off Point Pelee in twenty five feet of water with the Flossie B aiding near the overturned hull.
Berlin reports Jacob Michael of Frankfurt became the richest man in Germany by buying paper marks and selling real value as currency collapsed. He built a chemical empire with branches in Stockholm Zurich and Amsterdam and amassed control of thirty firms amid wartime tungsten profits and postwar devaluation.
Washington May 3 report shows the Ku Klux Klan losing strength as Southern Democrats desert it and several senators unaffiliated by controversy over Klan influence in the 1924 campaign. Legislation in Texas bans masked men in public spaces and churches as Klan papers falter and rival groups rise.
United States delegation opens talks in Geneva seeking to ban war material shipments to China. Japanese officials warn a clash with Washington could erupt if China is targeted. Germany’s arms exports and possible treaty ratification loom as allies weigh St. Germain terms.
Three capital groups in New York Chicago and Detroit plan an overnight private air mail and express line. A $1 500 000 capital will back the venture with key backers including Edsel Ford Marshall Field Philip Wrigley Reed Landis and C M Keys. Flights would depart at 9 p m and arrive by 6 30 a m with a $2 a pound rate for mail.
W T Van Orman piloting the Goodyear III covered the greatest distance in the national elimination balloon race, landing Reform Alabama after 530 miles. Seestain H Honeywell, disqualified in part, finished second as the St Joseph crew landed Aberdeen Mississippi. Major Maurice Smith and Herbert V Thaden faced disqualifications. Army S-14 flown by Lt William J Flood ended 350 miles Baicsville Arkansas.
New York writer Albert Payson Terhune reports his gold and white collie Explorer vanished from Miss Genevieve Torry's kennels in Pompton Lakes New Jersey. He traced the dog to Tarrytown after it slipped outside a door left unlocked. Terhune offers a $100 reward and fears the dog may be hungry or hurt if not found soon.
Captain H. E. Honeywell landed near Aberdeen at 1 10 this morning aboard the balloon St Joseph and denied delaying the start. He said high wind already ripped an Army balloon to pieces and he did not want his balloon destroyed. He noted twenty one races and four international races and claimed no prior disqualification for delaying a race started within the time limit.
Detroit May 3. Scotty Petherbridge, rescued from Lake Erie after the Kelley Island incident, reveals eighth shipwreck and intent to date fate by signing again as a sailor on the Great Lakes. He faces a possible ninth wreck and cites three Great Lakes disasters this Saturday. Death came closer yesterday than in prior incidents.
In Gary Indiana a charred body found near Furnessville road is identified by Florence Kish Doto as that of Mrs. Josephine Desiderio 21. Doto, a friend from South Bend, confirmed the dress and other articles. Desiderio’s estranged husband Fréd Desiderio is being questioned.
Dayton May 3 The issue centers on Orville Wright's statements about the Langley plane and calls for a congressional probe into Dr Charles D Walcott Smithsonian unlicensed use. Rep Roy Fitzgerald vows to initiate proceedings to investigate. emphasis remains on Wrights credit and alterations to Langley machine. Lord Northcliffe recalls Wrights receiving an award claiming the Wrights built and flew the first machine.
Two miners died and three were injured in a pocket gas explosion at Norton Coal Company's Mine No 6 in Nortonville Kentucky. The blast occurred 200 feet underground while seven miners worked the Sunday night shift led by Finch Southard. JACK RODGERS and FINCH SOUTHARD died. two escaped unharmed and the identities of the injured were not disclosed.
Washington May 3 Dr Walcott secretary of the Smithsonian denies Orville Wrights charges regarding the award of the Wright Brothers first successful aeroplane to a British museum. He gives his account of 1914 Curtiss tests and explains Langley plane custody and testing history.
