In Eccles West Virginia May 2 1930 the rescue of 172 miners entombed in Mine No 5 of the New River Collieries continued. By tonight 36 bodies were recovered with twenty more found and due at surface by morning. Earl Henry West Virginia Chief Mine Inspector supervised the operation stating recovery would speed. Most identified by checks, most buried. one body blown hundreds of feet from the mouth. Relief to dependents is ongoing with no reported shortages.
In Youngstown Ohio on a May Friday, Simon Tron donovich died from heart disease while chopping wood. During preparations for the Trondonovich funeral his brother-in-law Ares Bosondis, already ill with pneumonia, was left unattended and died during the family's absence. The report notes the sequence as a tragic family accident.
