New York May 2 President Wilson met for three hours with New Jersey Democratic Senators and Assemblymen to discuss jury reform. He failed to unite his party on a bill and faced sharp criticism as plans for a referendum and a county jury commission were debated for future action in Trenton and at subsequent conferences.
Judge Thomas M. Bigger of the Common Pleas Court ruled Ohio cannot tax interstate receipts of corporations in the Buckeye Pipe Line case, a Standard Oil subsidiary. The state sought to collect $200,000. The decision centers on an excise tax question.
Count Henckel Von Donnersmarck, a noted German arms maker, figures in a Reichstag scandal stirred by Socialist delegate Dr Liebknecht. He contends the Boston & Maine and Pullman contracts were favorable to the railroad, and disputes companion testimony on securities values.
Kansas City May 2 The police hunt along the Missouri River three miles east of downtown for the bandit who held up a Kansas City Southern Railroad train last night and shot businessman Jesse M Short of Joplin Missouri. Blood footprints led toward the lowlands and an empty pocketbook once containing 1000 dollars was found. Short wounded in shoulder and leg is recovering in hospital with good prospects.
May 4 report from Mexico City says 120 killed when a train was dynamited by Zapatistas near La Castada in Morelos. Rebels also destroyed a block of 33 buildings after gaining Matehuala, with censorship delaying telegraphic news.
In Rome on May 2 Pope Pius is eager to resume duties and will begin receptions with Cardinal De Lai Secretary of the Consistorial Congregation and Cardinal Pompili Vicar General of Rome. He hopes to discuss questions concerning America with De Lai and has not met Pompili since his appointment.
The city greets warm weather as temperatures rise from weeks of cold. At Fountain Square the afternoon reached about 2 deg on the kiosk thermometer while the Federal Building tower logged a high of 87 deg. Residents celebrate the early May warmth as the season begins.
New York weather records show May 2 marked the hottest May 2 in local Weather Bureau history with a 87 degree reading in the early afternoon. One heat prostration was reported as the heat persisted for two hours in the city.
The official thermometer hit 86 degrees at 4 PM making May 2 the hottest day of the year and the warmest May 2 ever recorded by the local Weather Bureau in Philadelphia.
In a bankruptcy case a creditor listed as Indianapolis by George F. Kreittem, seeking to identify a creditor, faces a question before the Supreme Court. The Indiana federal district court ruled the address insufficient for statute compliance and Kreittem appeals.
Special Cable reports intimate friends say Mrs Edith Wharton may seek a divorce from Edward Wharton. They note living apart for some time with little likelihood of reconciliation. Edith Rhinelander Jones, a New York social figure, had left her husband in 1911 to work in Paris.
District Attorney Whitman took the stand as a witness in the trial of four former police inspectors accused of conspiracy. He joined A L Thomas of the DA staff after defense objections about confidentiality. The defense called witnesses to contest that Murtha and others conspired to obstruct justice by bribing grand jury witnesses.
New York May 2. A strike vote by 100000 Eastern territory conductors and trainmen was ordered after railroad managers refused wage arbitration. The vote, overseen by A B Garretson and W G Lee, could take two weeks and may lead to further talks.
Rochester, N Y May 2 four strikes are in progress with every iceman in the city out this morning. Union carpenters in most wood working factories are out and promise a complete tie up of the industry by Monday. Some union painters have struck in sympathy and tile makers and helpers at a brickyard are out and aiming to spread. Wages increases and shorter hours are the demands driving the action.
In Burlington on May 2 during a major strike among iron mill workers, women largely wives of foreign laborers helped overpower police and deputies and freed prisoners from a patrol wagon. Police used clubs. no serious injuries reported as 20 men resumed work at the United States foundry.
A lengthy congressional debate covers tariff provisions on citrus fruit and textiles, with clashes over taxes and duty schedules. Representatives Thomas and Mann spar over identity and tactics while Heflin attacks the overall tax burden and party stances.
The Republican minority on the Ways and Means Committee split over a substitute for the cotton tariff schedule during debate. Pennsylvania and Fordney rejected minor changes while Gardner proposed a three paragraph compromise between Enderwood and the Payne tariffs, but the substitute and other amendments were voted down.

Miss Katherine Belden seeks action via guardian ad litem alleging Jones promised marriage after a Europe trip, while relations remained unsettled and papers filed amid mystery. Jones, president of the American Embassy Association, and a member of Metropolitan Lawyers and Stock Exchange clubs, denies knowledge of the matter.
