Reports say eight people died and eighty were wounded as Berlin police dispersed May Day rioters in the Pankstrasse area. Communists clashed with authorities, barricades rose, and armored cars joined the crackdown amid ongoing unrest across eastern districts. Policemen faced heavy fire and urban darkness as authorities regained control.
Washington May 1. Representative LaGuardia accuses the Hoover administration of unequal enforcement of prohibition. He cites police clashes with rum runners across Maryland and Virginia and calls for policy changes to curb crime blamed on the dry law.
A brawl among alleged members of a handbook ring is linked to the fatal shooting of August Bruck in the Gibson Hotel Newport Kentucky at midnight. Warrants name Joseph Plunkett and Edward Hall. Plunkett, son of a former Chicago police captain, checked into the Gibson after leaving Kemper Lane apartments. Coroner cites a .32 caliber pistol with four bullets. one hole through hand to abdomen, another in chest and heart, third in head, fourth in forearm. Floyd E. William Sanford Wright 18, Wheelersburg High School athlete, dies after a fatal shooting while walking home two miles east of Wheelersburg. Sheriff reports a history of fights and rough play on and off the field. a 12 gauge shotgun shell found at a suspect's home links to the death.
Mrs Hattie McElroy of 34 East Fourteenth Street won $5,500 in damages from garage owner Edmund Posner after a July 21 morning tirade in front of her home that neighbors witnessed. Posner admitted being present. jurors weighed intoxication as a defense in this slander case.
New York May 1 rain fell as Oscar Tschirky led the farewell benediction at the Waldorf Astoria. The famed hotel, born from Boldt’s folly and linked to William Waldorf Astor, ends its era after a last gathering in the grand ballroom with Bishop Manning Senator Copeland and the Mayor of New York recalling past days of Peacock Alley and towering offices.
In Indianapolis a 64 year old man Edward F Kilner was found shot dead in bed. His wife Jeanette Kilner 52 lay wounded beside him with a revolver hidden in the bedding. Neighbour Florence Hague daughter of Kilner reports hearing a quarrel last night but no further sounds. Police question whether wife or husband fired the shots.
After coroner's investigation into the Little Dry Run road crash that fatally injured 18 year old Mary McDaniel, her father William McDaniel of Metamora Ind. charged Ray Osborne 20 of Norwood with manslaughter. Osborne drove the car that ran off the road near Newtown and overturned pinning McDaniel in wreckage.
A tornado and storms in Arkansas and Georgia leave eight dead and over thirty injured. In Brinkley near Wheatley Arkansas five killed and fifteen injured as homes and barns collapse and telegraph lines fail. Georgia reports three killed and more than a dozen hurt from tornadoes and wind hail in Burke and Jefferson counties with other injuries and property damage.
Dr Otto P Geier presented the plan for a birth control clinic in Cincinnati while Dr Alfred Gaither was incorrectly reported as the proposer The resolution was in fact introduced by Geier at the Cincinnati Academy of Medicine meeting Monday night
Berlin May 1. Dr Hjalmar Schacht told Cabinet and banking and industrial leaders before leaving for Paris that the German delegation foresees no solution to Germany reparations at the present Dawes Conference and perhaps not at a later one. He indicated three memoranda will be submitted before conference closes one from creditors, one from Germany, and a third by Owen D Young on Germany capacity to produce and pay.

Kansas City May 1. Carl C Lebach 21 identified as a newly wed bridegroom who tried to finance a honeymoon with a hold up. He and his 18 year old wife Mariel Bothwell were involved in a drug store robbery attempt. Durward Lobach 18 confessed involvement in recent robberies.
