Fifth Largest Tunnel Holed Through Cascades
The fifth largest tunnel in the world was holed through under the Cascade Mountains in Washington at 1 o'clock today by a dynamite blast set off by electricity when President Coolidge pressed a button. The Great Northern Railway built it at a cost of 16 million dollars, with electrification and line changes bringing total expenditure to 25 million. The 7.79 mile tunnel, 100 miles east of Seattle, will remove curves, lower the ridge line by 500 feet, and cut eight miles from the route. First through traffic is planned next December after three years of construction.
