From Washington to Mansfield the renewed talk that John Sherman may seek the Ohio governorship during summer at his Mansfield home spreads a cheerful rumor. A Washington correspondent recalls Shermans amused reaction when told he was a candidate and notes the public interest in the aging statesman.
Representative Dolliver of Iowa said in an interview that he believes Mr Sherman of New York would win the Speakership unless Western Congressmen unite. He planned to urge Western candidates to form an agreement to back the candidate with the highest first ballot vote when he reaches Chicago.
Special dispatch from Richmond reports Governor J Hoge Tyler acknowledging Colonel Funston of the Twentieth Kansas as his cousin. Tyler notes Funston’s grandmother Sarah Hoge was his grandfather’s sister and that she married Colonel Edward Stafford of Giles. He says Funston’s gallantry reflects Virginia blood.

Special Dispatch reports two meteors fell noon in Vincennes Indiana. One hit a stone slab on a B&O flat car as the train crossed the Wabash Bridge, shattering it. The second meteor struck a brick pile nearby with a loud crash, scattering fragments. Councilman Charles B O'Donnell and contractor Alexander Runyon stood within four feet of the impact, collecting fragments. The objects appeared nearly round, rough yellow or orange exterior, snow white interior.
On May 1 in Cleveland Ohio two hundred fathers struck for an eight hour day and 250 dollars daily before noon they won their demand and returned to work. Two hundred plasterers also struck for 38 dollars a day for eight hours. About fifty hod carriers went out seeking an advance from 130 to 2 dollars a day. Seventy five structural iron workers struck for 35 cents an hour and for an eight hour day. No disturbances were reported.
Portsmouth Ohio May 1 Alex Atkins a prominent town figure is badly mauled by a John Robinson show lion. Atkins warned an attendant then the lion slashed his right hand and arm tearing flesh. He fainted and the beast ripped flesh from his left cheek. Injuries deemed fatal though recovery would leave severe disfigurement.

Springfield Ohio May 1 announcement the Warder Bushnell Glessner Company announces a ten percent wage increase for employees in Lagonda with 1400 to 1500 workers. Raises are not uniform by department as caremakers and molders gain more than others. The firm, led by Governor Asa Bushnell, has seen phenomenal business and operates twelve hours daily. A new blacksmith shop will be built to handle increased output.

Howell Morgan formerly a storekeeper at Port Valdes Alaska shot himself in a Grand Trunk train water closet while en route to Bayonne New Jersey tonight. He feared pursuers though no pursuer was seen. He had been in Alaska for a year and was returning home.
Ten of fourteen Illinois Republican Congressmen met in Chicago and voted unanimously to support Albert J. Hopkins of Aurora for Speaker of the House. Walter Reeves chaired the meeting and Cannon urged unity. Four members sent pledges by telegram. Cannon said he would push Hopkins' candidacy. another meeting is planned next week to advance the effort.

A May 1 cable from Admiral Dewey reports ten Yorktown boat crew members, including Gilmore, are held at insurgent headquarters near San Fernando after the Baler action. The department fears five others may have been killed or fatally wounded, while awaiting names of those in Filipino hands.

Dispatch from General Otis reports Captain Rockefeller of the Ninth Infantry missing since April 25 near Caloocan. He had joined the regiment in 1887 after Civil War service and sailed for Manila with his unit, arriving April 26. Private papers found two and a half miles to the front suggest he was captured or lost his course, with exhaustive searches failing to locate him.
